Press pros and cons.

Thinking about getting a new single stage press. I currently have a Redding Boss, it does everything extremely well, including spitting expended primers all over my basement. I've pretty well narrowed my new selections to Redding T-7, Redding Big Boss II and the new RCBS Rebel. Some reviews on the Reddings claim that expended primers go out through the hollow ram and are expended out the bottom of the hollow ram. Other reviews I've read say that is only partially true, saying that they are expended through a tube attached to the ram an some/many of the primers still end up being scattered about. The one review I've been able to find on the new RCBS press says expended primers are expended out the bottom of the ram into a vessel below. Any opinions about any of the selections I've mentioned from the members will be greatly appreciated, thanks to all that reply.

I have a lot of different presses and most of them work about like you describe above. The only one that does not have the primer problem is the Bonanza Co-Ax; that is a lot of press just for the deprime feature. I did buy a simple single stage Lee and used it just for depriming and that worked about as well as anything else. I am currently using the T-7 with the tube directed into a trash can and pick up a few on the floor from time to time.

I use a T-7. The primers do go out through the ram into a tygon hose with a plug in the end. You just clean it out when it gets filled up. I do have primers that skip out onto the floor on occasion, though. It happens. But most of them go into the tube.

If I had to put a number on it, I'd say 10% of the primers miss the tube. Some land on the press, some on the floor. It's probably less than 10%, but it's close. I've never counted them.

Agreed. I had a Redding Big Boss II and now have a Redding T-7 and a Forster Co-Ax and have used each of the presses through the entire reloading process. I now use Forster for de-capping only as I find it ergonomically awkward but it is a "lot of press" for just depriming. The remainder of my reloading on the Redding T-7 but I do agree with JMS that the number of primers that miss the tube with the Redding is relatively small.

Big boss II Spits the primers out the bottom of the ram into an attached tube, empty it when it fills.
Yes, there is a slot for the primer arm in the ram, and some primers will miss and end up on the floor through this slot.
Simple solution if you dont prime on the press is to remove primer arm, and cut a narrow piece if 7mm or 1/4" ply and block off the slot (leave a gap behind obviously)
No primers miss the tube then.
Cheers

I use an RCBS Jr. I purchased in the late 60's. Always had a problem with primer flying off the cup that came with the press.

My fix was that I made a shield cutting it from a plastic food contained of the appropriate diameter. It's about 4" high all around except for relief cut to 2" long and 2" high on the right side so I can access the shell holder. I catches 98% of all spent primers. I place a waste basket underneath the press that catches any that escapes the shield. Works really good.

I use the Redding ultra mag and have the exact results you describe the hollow tube goes to the trashcan but once in a great while it will kick one out on the floor

E-Bay older RCBS Rock Chucker.
New Redding Big Boss 2 ( I have this ).
My Rock Chucker is 30-35 years young ! still make Match Grade Ammo.

I still shoot F/Class
Shot Service Rifle ,and Palma all on that Chucker .

Had a Orange Crusher the positive cast stop broke off ? was good up till then ?

My T-7 Redding would spit the occasional primer on the floor. Since I don't use the press to prime, I stuffed a whittled piece of wood in the primer arm slot. Now there's no way for the primers to escape, 100% go down the tube into a container.

I've heard good things about the MEC Marksman. I've always wanted to give one a try but my older then me RCBS Rock Chucker is still going strong.

I have a mec marksman it is an awesome press!

Can you give us info on why you think it’s so great?... why it’s so much better than say a rockchucker?... pros and cons?.. I’ve been interested in one for sometime and actually went to sportsman’s a few weeks ago to buy one but they only had the MEC shotgun presses

338Dude,
I have a T7 and love it!.... I’ve loaded thousands upon thousands of rounds with it and the only time I hear one hit the floor is when I forget to empty the tube!.... what’s the difference if you know in the Ultra mag and the Big boss ll ?

Fixed my RCBS Supreme by drilling through the ram and putting a 30° exit hole in it for the primers to shoot out the back of the ram into a trash can below the bench. To keep the primers from flying out the top, I use a piece of 3/8" fuel line tubing (steel). Primers never hit the floor unless I forget to place the trash can under the press.

The Forster COAX does it all, but especially no decapped primers on the floor. Yes, it is expensive, Yes, you need to use Forster die locking rings, yes it is a bit awkward because the handle travel is significant. But it is a dream to use, easy, accurate and smooth. Set the dies up once and you are done.

I have been enjoying the PraziPress for a while now but I recently ordered the Italian version. The top one is their 'Universal'-style press and the bottom two are the Talon:

Pretty close to 1/2 the price of the PraziPress. :)
