Stockings, tears, and so much thankfulness
Merry Christmas to Jedi’s journey family!! Boy, it’s been a full few months since I last chatted with you all. I’ll start with a little story explaining my title for this update, as it sums up a lot of the emotions tied up in this journey of cancer and subsequent healing (physically and emotionally).
Last week we pulled out the Christmas decorations and decked out our house for the holidays. This was extra special for us because, spending last Christmas in the hotel, we didn’t get to decorate the house. As I opened one tote I noticed the boys’ stockings inside. As I pulled them out one by one I looked at the names and came upon Jedi’s. I can’t even begin to put into words the amount of emotions I felt in that moment. I was so overwhelmed with thankfulness that Jedi is still here to celebrate the holidays with us. There were times last year where we did not think Jedi would celebrate another Christmas here on earth. And the tears came…tears of joy for Jedi’s healing and tears of sadness for those who I know have pulled that stocking out for their loved one who is no longer with them for the holidays I’m comforted by the promise that, “He will wipe every tear from their eyes. There will be no more death or mourning or crying or pain, for the old order of things has passed away.” Revelation 21:4
We continue to be thankful for those promises from our Savior to help us through the days ahead.
Now for the update: Jedi returned to school in person in September and has loved being back with his friends. As you can imagine, it’s been quite an adjustment compared to online school last year. As the months have gone on his focus has improved and he is able to finish his work in a more timely manner. He has had a few illnesses here and there with some slight fevers, but he has recovered well from them. He started playing basketball at school in early November, and he is also participating in parkour at the YMCA (they have a wellness program for kids recovering from cancer; what a blessing!) November brought us to his one year bone marrow transplant (BMT) anniversary and also a slew of tests. His kidney scan, his heart ultrasound, his CT scans and his PET scan all showed normal function and no evidence of disease! His blood counts have stayed the same or improved slightly. We have so much thankfulness for all these good results!
After his PET scan at the end of November he developed a sore throat and a cough, so we had to reschedule his appointment at Madison. That will be this Wednesday, so when I get results from that appointment (blood work will take a while to come back) I’ll update you again.
Back to that sore throat and cough…he seemed to be getting better, but then his cough got deeper, his chest started hurting and he developed a fever. I brought him in for evaluation, and he was diagnosed with pneumonia and put on two antibiotics. He is slowly getting better and even asked to go to parkour yesterday! He also had a snowball fight with his brothers. So thankful he is on the mend. His cough still sounds so rough, but it may just take a bit for that all to resolve.
This fall Jedi also received a call from his sweet nurse, Angie and his amazing child life specialist, Cheri. They told him that he was nominated and then selected to be a Children’s Miracle Network hero! Jedi was so excited and gladly accepted the role. CMN helped us out in various ways during Jedi’s treatment and we are extremely grateful. We love that this particular organization supports local families (many of whom we have had interactions with) and so our family is happy to be a part of it. Keep your eyes peeled for some awesome pictures of our cute Jedi!
One last note, we were informed from Jedi’s doctors that a bone marrow transplant wipes out any immunities he had from his childhood vaccines. We are working on a schedule for this and ask for prayer that his body is able to handle them well. The doctors also said they don’t expect his immune system to be fully recovered until 2 years post transplant, so he still has healing to do
Thank you all for continuing to join us in prayer for our sweet boy. We thank God for you and your support!
Sending holiday cheer and blessings from the Schaller house!
With love,
Dianna
