Prayers for Nephew

Whoa…it’s been 6 months!

Journal entry by Dianna Schaller — Feb 1, 2023

A warm hello to Jedi’s journey family from our very chilly Wisconsin!! Much has happened since our last connection, so I’ll try to hit the highlights for you
Jedi started school at the end of August, after his last set of tests, and is doing great in 7th grade. We was very excited to be back with his friends!
November brought an appointment where we discussed all the recommended future testing to monitor for potential issues from Jedi’s cancer treatments. As you can imagine, this was a difficult appointment. Almost all of the medications he received have the potential to cause a secondary cancer in the future. However, we hold that our trust for Jedi’s future has and will always remain in the Lord and His plan
Also in November, (over his birthday) Jedi finally received his wish of traveling to Galaxy’s Edge (Star Wars theme park) in Florida. All eight of us were able to travel to Orlando where we spent 6 days celebrating how far Jedi has come. We stayed in a condo at Give Kids the World Village. If you have never heard of that village you can look it up online and see all the amazing things it has to offer families who have/or have had a child with a serious health condition. It was such a blessing to stay there, enjoy the awesome food, and meet some amazing people (mostly all volunteers). We spent 1.5 days at Universal Studios and 2.5 days at the Disney parks, with Galaxy’s Edge as the definite overall favorite (not surprising with all the Star Wars fans in our house). It truly was a family trip we will always cherish!
Jedi has also been rocking basketball this season. You’ll often see him giving slaps of encouragement on his teammates backs! This makes us smile even more than the balls he gets in the hoop
December brought us to Madison where we had Jedi’s “care for life” appointment. This one was similar to the appointment we had in LaCrosse in November. All the recommendations for follow up care in the future. They graduated Jedi from their BMT care, so we can do follow up exclusively in LaCrosse now! This was a big day to reflect, extend gratefulness, and celebrate how far Jedi has come since the beginning of this journey
Since Jedi’s blood work was a little off in November they asked us to have it repeated at the beginning of January. When we got the results on MyChart, I just stared at them in shock! I said, “Jedi, look!” (He has seen a lot of his CBCs, so he knew what he was looking at) His eyes got really big, he smiled that amazing Jedi smile and said, “Mom, they are all in the green! That has never happened!” With tears in my eyes I shook my head and said, “Yep, it’s normal for the very first time since you got sick almost 3 years ago!” Such an answer to so many prayers
This Friday, February 3rd, is Jedi’s CT scans, blood work, lung function tests and EKG. Please join us in praying for clear CT results, continued “normal” bloodwork, and good lung and heart function. We are so thankful for your continued support and prayers for our sweet boy! I will update you all after the results are in at the end of the week
“Let the morning bring me word of your unfailing love, for I have put my trust in you. Show me the way I should go, for to you I entrust my life.” ~Psalms 143:8
Blessings on your week,
Dianna and the Schaller guys

What’s life without a few bumps in the road?

Happy (almost end of) February to you all
As I mentioned, in my last message, Jedi had his routine scans to check for recurrence of cancer, he had some bloodwork, and we met with the doctor. We are overjoyed to share with you that his CT scans were clear of cancer, the bloodwork they did was essentially normal, and at this point, we don’t need to do any more scans in the future, unless there is a recurrence of symptoms. This was a shock to us, as we thought we had at least one more set of CT scans, but we are so happy that he’s doing well enough to stop the scans. Part of the reason I didn’t make a post sooner, is because the day after his scans, Jedi started having pain in his left thigh. He had played three basketball games, so we thought he had just strained a muscle or something like that. We had him use ice and rest but, as the weekend went on, the pain increased to the point where he couldn’t put any pressure on his leg. By Tuesday we were in to see pediatric orthopedics, where an x-ray showed no obvious break in his femur. With the increased pain, the weird presentation, and his history, they decided they needed to dig a little further. The CT scans he had don’t go down to the thigh area, so we needed further scanning to look at that area.
Jedi had more blood work (to check for infection) which was fine, and they scheduled an MRI for the next day. The MRI showed that he had the beginnings of a stress fracture in his femur. Poor guy! Although this finding is not great, we are incredibly thankful that the scan did not show cancer! The doctor said non-weight bearing for three weeks and then partial weight-bearing for three more weeks after. We will also have a consult with pediatric endocrinology to evaluate his bone health further. Pain control has been a challenge, but we feel like that has gotten better over the weeks.
As any active 13-year old kid would be, Jedi is bummed that he couldn’t participate in his basketball party or in PE at school (he loves pickle ball). We’ve also had to rework plans for little trips and family activities…plans change this we know Perspective is a great attitude adjuster in these situations. Although the changes can at first seem disappointing, when you hold them up to the struggles of the past few years, they hold very little weight
In other news, we would like to share something awesome with you! Jedi was asked to co-emcee the Miracle Gala (an evening dinner event for Children’s Miracle Network) with a local news anchor. He is so excited for this opportunity, and we are thankful that he can continue to give back to CMN!
Thank you all again for your continued support of Jedi and our family. Please continue to pray with us for healing of Jedi’s leg and for wisdom for his endocrinology doctor during that evaluation process.

“May the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace as you trust in him, so that you may overflow with hope by the power of the Holy Spirit”~Romans 15:13

Sending love from our family to yours,
The Schallers
