Powder Prices Are Shocking

When the war in Ukraine started, I stocked up on powder and primers. I think I'm good for a couple years and hoping the wars calm down. But I see in the news today, it doesn't look good between Hezbollah, Hamas and Israel. Next thing you know, there'll be a serious problem between Taiwan and China. Powder and primer prices will probably remain high for a while. :(

Not a year ago. Varget was not available and MR2000 the closes's that will work in a Progressive loader and it was under $300
Varget has been available daily since September of 2022.

I don’t care though, because I’ve switch to Vihtavuori in pretty much everything and it’s still very reasonable (for this market.)

I did buy some varget for $45 the other day to use for fireforming, just because it was a reasonable deal.

In the process of swapping over to VV powders too but I'm afraid that market will soon sky-rocket too.
I’m kinda surprised that hasn’t happened yet, due to that they’re right next door to Russia. Under advice from some of the members here a couple of months ago I bought an 8 pounder of N135 and one of N133 for my br and groundhog rifles. I don’t shoot the big stuff too often anymore and I have enough pistol powders to easily last the rest of my life. With the assorted rifle powders I have myself and my sons are in good shape. Never left my stock of primers get low so good there too. No matter if prices come down in the future I probably won’t want to pay what they’re still gonna cost.

Once I find myself complaining about the cost of a sport, it’s no longer a sport.
Years ago I did this with sailboats. Eventually the cost was too much. ( check what’s needed to be somewhat competitive in the North Atlantic!)
Should I shoot less? Should I look to move into rimfires?
Whatever I do it will be for my enjoyment, if I find this sport cost prohibitive. That’s when it’s no longer a sport.

Milk, eggs, gas, paint, meat, veggies, fast food, --- everything seems to have gone up from 30 to 200%. Very few things are at, or even close to what they were a few years ago. It's funny, since we KNOW that inflation has only been like 3.7%. jd

Yikes. This is truly disgusting for sure.
Glad I'm still using canisters marked at $25, and still have beaucoup of the ones I use most. I cried when the price went to $25, and bought as much as I could afford at the time.
Don't want to take out a loan just to load up a few hundred rounds of rat ammo!

Again, with the election not far off, the question remains....."are you better off now than you were four years ago?" The answer seems simple.

Probably my lifetime!

Agree, for most of the time I have reloaded, VV was the most expensive. They don’t have any issue with occupying the high end and letting the product shoulder that mantle. Right now, they are priced below others.

All I can suppose is that they were more firmly entrenched when disruptions occurred and no one forced them into a panic, or to renegotiate from a compromised position, after which they had to raise prices.

But I imagine in the long run, they have no intention of pricing their powder at the cheapest end of the market, and that adjustments are coming.

Deals can still be found on GunBroker. I load Alliant 1200R for my AR loads and have a very nice stock of already loaded 223 rounds. I found 8lb cannisters for $269/lb and bought 2 for my stock. I'd like to have more but just don't see the need in my case a I already have a significant powder & primer supply. Bought 8 of Varget and 8 of CFE223 months ago.

This isn't gonna get any easier people. Remember that. Ammunition and water are going to be worth lots with what awaits us..

I haven't been to a restaurant in 4 years that includes fast food. Sardine sandwiches are my stable. I do allow myself one extravagance however, Maker's Mark. However, I may be moving to Jim Beam if things continue to deteriorate. :(

Varget is still reasonably prices locally at $50 a lbs. at least a couple of weeks ago. I almost exclusively shoot 223 Rem bolt rifles these days. I can get 280 reloads out of a pound of powder. Last year I got back into 22 LR rifle shooting after a very long absence. I purchased a Tikka T1X and enjoy shooting it a lot which give me more range time. CCI Standard Velocity is too expensive, at least at present.

One nice thing about the 223 Rem is that it tolerates a lot of powders for producing good accuracy.

I hope I am wrong, but I see it getting much worse especially if the current administration is re-elected.

Several old farts like me around here are getting to the point where they can no longer afford to pay their property taxes. In my opinion, taxing a person's home is the absolute most egregious tax ever devise by the government.
