Places to Live & Shoot

My wife and I live in the San Francisco bay area, a place that is the antithesis of our core beliefs, hostile to 2A rights, offers little in the way of long range shooting venues, and for all that, I get to enjoy exorbitant costs of living and taxes. We are looking elsewhere, but a move is a big deal, especially from a cultural fit point of view. Of course I want a good place to shoot as well! I would like to hear from those who have moved from a liberal place and moved to a more conservative city or state. Surprises, pros, cons, regrets... I have often heard don't move just for better gun rights, since there can be much more you may hate so much, the gun freedom may be dwarfed. My wife AND I both must be happy.

I have considered the Nampa, ID area, as well as Gilbert, AZ, Utah, maybe Nevada. Can't beat weather in CA, but trying to stay as close to it as possible. 1/2+ acre lot, 2500+ square foot home, low crime, quiet, friendly area, nearby gun shooting area, works. Anyone know of the place and can comment on living there? We plan on taking a drive to some select places to explore.

Phil

I know it's the wrong side of the country for you but I've been asking myself a similar question. In S. Mississippi I currently live in a gun rights paradise. That's not why I'm thinking of moving. The summers are just too hot here. I've been thinking of somewhere around the junction of N. Carolina, northern Georgia and eastern Tennessee. Some place with a little elevation and cooler summers. I just got back from a casual visit to that area and at first blush it looks like a nice place. Restaurants have NRA stickers on the windows. Lots of gun shops. Gas is a bit high in N.C. Any members here from that area?

i live in Ne Ga and there is great weather, Cherokee Gun Club in Gainesville,is great, limit 200yd, the area is very gun friendly, however, living with aminities you need to consider the minimum of Gainesville, and there the cost is high, Not like Ca, but high, and Atlanta is a monster.

i would look at Lincoln, Ne, check out the ranges there, the cost of living, and the proximity to Omaha.

Lincoln is the area of the univiersity of Ne, etc. lots to go for it.

Bob

Come out and check out Douglas County Nevada which is just south of Carson City and just east of Lake Tahoe. About a four drive from the bay area. Our county range is $2 per vehicle from sunrise to sunset. And there is a 1,000 yard range just north of Reno.

I lived in Western NC in the early part of my life until I got out of college. I now live in southwest GA. I hate the summertime!!! I would love to get back in western NC. I just cant find a job doing what I like there right now. But other than Asheville and a few pockets around its pretty gun friendly. There are a few die hard liberals here and there and you just have to deal with them. But with that said I am happy where I am now if the summer was just not so dang hot and humid. Matt

I drove through the mountains in Virginia this April and stayed over night in Charlottesville the foot hills of the blue ridge mountains at a place called the Old English Inn I believe. We were down for the Richmond race and figured we would take the scenic route. I though it was beautiful land with ample shooting opportunity. We figured we would drive to Fairfax in the morning and visit the NRA museum and then head back over to the track. I will just say it is a hole different world anywhere near DC but I guess you have a little of everything there. I personally would pick a low tax state like Tennessee.

I'm in the same mode, Phil. San Diego is impossible to replace regarding weather and we have Camp Pendleton matches twice per month, almost all year. But, the political climate, cost of living, taxes and absurd regulations are forcing a decision. [br]
I've looked at Arizona (summers too hot), Texas (only one 1000 yard range in hot and humid Houston), western Wyoming (very nice summers, winters a little nippy). Texas and Wyoming have no state income tax. Neither does Nevada but I consider it politically unreliable and I don't like the gambling culture. It will come down to the place with the fewest downsides. Maybe I'll put together a weighted list and try to quantify it. [br]
I've lived in Florida, Pennsylvania, Tennessee, Maine, Illinois, northern Nevada and California. None of those, for various reasons, are appealing. Maybe I should be like Bill (Nomad47) and do the turtle thing. ;)

Gilbert AZ is excellent for what you are looking for>>>BUT it does get a bit toasty there.. I live in Houston, Texas. There is little doubt of what this state stands for and the SOUTHERN area around Houston has easy access to some excellent ranges! However, it is a bit toasty here too!..

I live about 2hrs north of Nampa. Thear are a LOT frindlier nicer places in the area. Eagol on the north side is great tucked in the foothills mild winters has a few snow storms each winter but never stays long will get to 100 deg in the summer but not for long. It has 4 seasons. Within a few min drive you can shoot Timothy ground squerls or even rock chucks. Up close or over 1k yards. The Boise area has some shooting clubs and hold some shoots. Contact Cliff at cliffs gun safes and reloading he can fill you in on the details. I dont shoot maches anymore so I am not up on them. I do shoot a lot of critters.
Elk deer bear turkey lion wolf all over the counter for the most part if you like to hunt.
If I was to look in the low lands I would look at Emmitt not to far out 15-20 min lower home price mo varmit shooting

Best move we ever made was to Las Vegas NV from NY. Weather and firearms rights.

Living in Las Vegas is far different from visiting. Home values are sharply on the rise now, but still undervalued.

Our home in LV is way beyond what our home(s) in NY offered, and the tax advantages are wonderful. Airline connections are among the best in the US.

Did I mention class 3 firearms... Oh baby it a fun place with excellent access to many shooting venues, including distances to 1K.

And Clark county Nv. is still the worst county for gun control in Nevada..

Kinda funny that the worst county in Nv. is still that much better than N.Y. 8)

Missoula, MT <> Deep Creek Range

One of the nicest ranges I've ever been to that covers a lot of shooting disciplines (out to 1000yds). I refer to it as "the tunnel" because it is well protected. A bad wind day there is like a good wind day at many other ranges.

Missoula is big enough to have a bit of everything. Mild winters with people who care about our gun rights. Lots of open natural space and beautiful mountain scenery

If I was to move, I would considered moving there or near there.....

Yea, and moving from SF to Missoula you won't even have to worry about taking the rainbow stickers off your vehicle etc if you have them!

And, when it's raining? ;) (I grew up in Madeira Beach)

I just have to chime in for our glorious mountain state of West Virginia. We are one of the if not the most gun friendly states in the USA, almost half of our state representatives are card carrying members of the NRA. I belong to 3 gun clubs, one club is within 5 minutes from my house. There is 4 to 6 shooting clubs near me that I can choose which club I want to go to this Sunday and shoot in a match. We have great hunting, great fishing and great camping. At anytime I can be outside and hear gun shots up on the hill near my house in our little community, just like the old days, try that in a lot of places in America. Wild Wonderful West Virginia, Mountaineers are always free.

Lots of places to shoot here but check out the Gilbert,AZ temps for the past couple of weeks. Yeah, it's a dry heat but 110-115 is still hot!

Hi Phil,
Let me provide you with 2 perspectives from my point of view.
I moved from clark County Nv, and I certainly did my share of shooting down there, and when I retired from the Navy in 1989 and moved there it was a red state, and there was quite a bit of shooting available. Then in the middle to late 90"s the crowd from the L.A. Basin started moving there in droves, and of course the gang problem came along for the ride. I watched as the town was taken ove by the left wing loons! Today there is a beautiful new shooting facility, that parks and recreation built for 52 Million dollars, how do I know this because I was at all of the planning meetings for it until I moved up here to Nampa, Id. My personal view of Las Vegas, is that they built too much, too fast and it has impacted the area in a very negative way,
When we moved to Idaho in 2005, I have to say I have never lived anywhere that the people in a community are as polite and kind as they are here. When you come to a four way stop sign drivers actually wait their turn and wave each other through the intersection, when we first saw this, my wife said in Vegas the drivers behind you would have been honking their horns and flipping you off. I belong to 3 shooting clubs 1 is here in Nampa, and the range is about 5 miles from my home, I have a key to go shoot any time I want and there are 7 pistol bays, 1 rifle range that goes out to 500 yards, a silohette range for rifle, this same club has an indoor range that opens in November, and remains open all winter, and you can shoot Wed and Fri evenings, and if you want to shoot in a rimfire rifle leauge or pistol leauge they shoot on Mon., Tues., and Thur. Cost to shoot on open nights is $1.00 to members and $3.00 for a non member guest! Price of membership with key privledges for a senior is $90.00 a year. They also shoot at the outdoor range all winter weather permitting IDPA, USPSA, Steel matches etc. There are several other clubs within a 35 mile range that shoot all the above disiplines.
We have a 2500 SqFt Semi custom built home that was $102.00sqft in 05. taxes on that house are slightly over $2000.00 Auto insurance is 50% of what it was in Vegas and this state is 3rd safest place to drive in the country!
I like the 4 seasons here and my wife does complain about the cold winter weather, but normally we only get 4-8" of snow and most of the time its gone by the afternoon. This is a Red state and I hope that the majority of people that move here from a blue state, realize that if the state they are leaving was as liberal as the Bay Area that they turn a new page and learn to embrace conservative values. We have a balanced budget law here in Idaho and the legislature can not adjorn for the year until the budget balances!!
There are a number of other laws that I won't go into, so as to not start an arguement here, but I will tell you that they fit my core beliefs!
Oh this was the best part of why I moved here, I love to hunt and fish and it is nothing short of phenominal here, Every year I buy the sportsman package which includes the following license, Elk Tag, Deer Tag, Bear Tag, Wolf Tag, Turkey Tag, Fishing and Hunting license, Steelhead permit, and Salmon permit.
The cost of all that is $127.50. and there is a river or lake no more than 15-20 minutes in any direction from my house! The area's I hunt are no more than an hour from the house. If you want to look at the calendar for the shooting club, just type in Nampa Rod and Gun Club. Good luck and who knows maybe we will meet one day.
