Pet Load for 30-06

I have had a few of them over the years and most shot best about midway between min and max with IMR 4064 and IMR 4350 with any 165-168 grn rounds. I used a lot of the IMR4350 back then because of its versatility.

I bought a beat up ADL in 30-06 years ago for basically nothing. It looked like it had been used as a handle for a tractor jack. It had a Luepod 4x on it. I lapped the lugs and squared the bolt face put a better scope on it. I did a rattle can finish and man would it shoot. I think it liked 57 grns of the IMR4350 best. With the factory barrel it would shoot 3/4 moa 5 shot groups most of the time. Shot it out to 500 meters quiet a bit. Killed a lot of deer and pigs with it until I had to part with it.

IMR 4350 @ 55.0
180gr Nosler Part
FC brass and FC 210 Match primer
Or
IMR 4350 @ 56.0
165 Sierra GK

Before IMR 4350 I was using IMR 4895 @ 47.0 in LC Brass with 150gr and 165gr killed a truck load of deer with that load.

Thanks for all the replies. This is why I'm on this forum.

WRT powders, I've got a pound of Superformance because I believed the hype, haven't tried it yet, but Hodgdon has it at the top of their lists for this question. It's a spherical powder so should meter well and a few people have used it in the .308 with the 178's with success. Anyone tried this powder? If not, Watch the forum for my findings.

Riflewoman, your # of 2950 is close enough for me. I'd like "palma-like" performance out of this rifle, flat-er shooting and legit 1000 y capable.

Thanks again.
You are a stud, but you do realize those old school limp wristed military guys were shooting those slow light loaded Garrand and 1903 Springfields at a 1000 yards with no optics, 152 grain 2150 fps, we know you could do that, keep loading them hot and you'll be buying a barrel a week.

Gents,

I shoot a model 700 with a 26" Rock Creek Rem sendero barrel, SAAMI chamber. I'd like to load Hornady 178ELD-M's in this and approach the 3000 FPS mark. This rifle is a consistent 1/2 min for 5 shots gun with creedmoor sports 30-06 ammo, but this round is slow, since it has to be de-laoded for the garand.

I could be talked in to the sierra 175's, plain, low tech. Powders on hand are H4350, IMR 4895, and Varget. I've got Lapua, PPU, and Winchester brass. If you've got something that works for you, please let me know.

God bless America

^^^^^^Two years ago I started hand loading for my Winchester model 70 3006. my second load up the ladder I shot a five shot group Cloverleaf at 100 yards and never moved my scope it was already zeroed I never chronographed the load because it was so good and I’ve been using it ever since. on a sidenote I’ve put this out on two different forums and several people responded back saying the load was amazing in there rifle as well

Actually Hunter powder provides the fastest Vel in the 175/180 range. I have always used IMR 4350 after IMR 4895 years ago. The main reason later learned the Rem 742 in 30-06 is reloaded very much like the M1 Garand with Mid Burning powders like 4895/4064.

IMR 4895 @ 47.2
175gr suggest 47.0 with 178gr
Very close to the military Match ammo

In summary, duplicating the M72 Match load with modern components isn’t difficult―indeed, it’s pretty much an exercise in classic, straight-forward handloading. The original 1958-1966 load was a 173-grain bullet launched at 2640 fps with approximately 46 to 48 grains of IMR 4895 and producing 50,000 psi. Here’s a modern recipe that produced one-inch groups at 100 yards, fired from a scoped Springfield M1903A4 rifle:

  • Bullet: 175-grain SMK (moly’d)
  • Case: Hornady
  • Primer: Fed 210M
  • IMR 4895: 46.5-grain
  • Velocity: 2657 fps

The first load I ever tried was from Ken Waters "PET LOADS" 52.5 grs IMR 4350 with 190 SMK bullet. That load won many matches at Camp Perry back in the day. Still works good today. I used it a my 30-06 BAR Safari. In that same book he lists 55grs of IMR 4350 as the most accurate load with 180gr Speer Magnum bullet. But that was a long time ago as far as the bullet goes. I never really messed with the lighter bullets. 190grs and up. Leave the lighter stuff to the .308's
Are you referring to the Model 1918 BAR? When I got in trouble during infantry training they made me pack one of those for punishment.
