Pet Load for 30-06

Gents,

I shoot a model 700 with a 26" Rock Creek Rem sendero barrel, SAAMI chamber. I'd like to load Hornady 178ELD-M's in this and approach the 3000 FPS mark. This rifle is a consistent 1/2 min for 5 shots gun with creedmoor sports 30-06 ammo, but this round is slow, since it has to be de-laoded for the garand.

I could be talked in to the sierra 175's, plain, low tech. Powders on hand are H4350, IMR 4895, and Varget. I've got Lapua, PPU, and Winchester brass. If you've got something that works for you, please let me know.

God bless America

Rl26. I'm shooting 178eldx in the 2875 range with a 24" barrel.
I believe 63.8 grains is max charge.
You will meed a drop tube for this.
I started at 60 gr. and worked up, settled on 62.
It would be nice to see what someone with better dies and set up could do with this combo.

I haven't tried H4350, but I loaded 59grns of IMR 4350 and a 150 Barnes TTSX a few years ago. I haven't shot all of them up, so I haven't tried H4350. As far as hunting with this load, it has killed everything I have shot with it. And has been the most accurate load I have loaded in the rifle.

Start at 53.5 and work up to 56 of “4350” (any of the three). Stop when you get your velocity or when the groups are good. I don’t youll get 3000 but you might get 2950. One of the powders might be better and I prefer IMR for most applications, but all should shoot well.

My favorite load was 57.0 grs H4350, 185 VLD, Winchester brass, and CCI-200 primer. With a 24" barrel I was getting an average speed of 2810 fps. 810 yards it was shooting 3" group with 4 shots. I regret selling the rifle.

Thanks for all the replies. This is why I'm on this forum.

WRT powders, I've got a pound of Superformance because I believed the hype, haven't tried it yet, but Hodgdon has it at the top of their lists for this question. It's a spherical powder so should meter well and a few people have used it in the .308 with the 178's with success. Anyone tried this powder? If not, Watch the forum for my findings.

Riflewoman, your # of 2950 is close enough for me. I'd like "palma-like" performance out of this rifle, flat-er shooting and legit 1000 y capable.

Thanks again.

I inquired about superformance at 1 time.
Picked up a lb for less than $20. Also bought into the hype.
Responses I got were great speed, lacking in accuracy.
I still haven't used it

I shoot a very hot load of H4350 with 180g, accuracy is fantastic@ 2850 MAX load for my rifle.

Play with primers, seating depth is critical for best accuracy.

Thanks again for the replies. Ackleyman, I've got a few Sierra 180's and some Berger 185's. Those are on the menu, too. Also, looking to push this close to max. More to follow.

190SMK over 54gns of IMR4350 and a healthy jump of 0.04 yielded excellent results in my grandpa's sporterized Mauser 98. It was HOT though. Completely flat cci lrm primers, and case head growth of 0.001 or so. Right on the cutting edge, and I had to pay attention to weather and temps so it wouldn't become dangerous.

I think you'll fall short on your velocity. I think 2850 is all you'll get.

How do you cram 63.8 grains in there? I have to fire form to get more then 56 grains of RL22 in my 270 and even then my accurate load of 57gr is filled tight, I suspect I could cram 58 plus or minus .5gr at MAX in my fireformed cases. Also I love my RL powders so far but I'm not even remotely as good as most here. edit:yet...

Rl26 is denser than Rl22.
That said, I hold case and funnel on an angle, tapping on top of bench while pouring verry slowly.
I went to 63gr. But accuracy is better @ 62.
Compressed for sure. Drop tube is a must.
Check out alliant load data, 270 w/130gr
3200fps.

The first load I ever tried was from Ken Waters "PET LOADS" 52.5 grs IMR 4350 with 190 SMK bullet. That load won many matches at Camp Perry back in the day. Still works good today. I used it a my 30-06 BAR Safari. In that same book he lists 55grs of IMR 4350 as the most accurate load with 180gr Speer Magnum bullet. But that was a long time ago as far as the bullet goes. I never really messed with the lighter bullets. 190grs and up. Leave the lighter stuff to the .308's

Thanks, Steve, almost agree with you, but I haven't tried the 190's yet. 178's, berger 185's, and sierra 180's (cause I have 'em) are on the menu. I'm going to start with H4350 and Lapua brass.

can you recommend a source for drop tube? Right now I'm looking at the Sinclair type A from Brownells. I don't load out of the measure.

Thanks

Same one I'm looking at.
I was reffering to the need of a long drop tube to squeeze 63.8 grains in.
