pet laods 30-06

well i read the posts on why the 30-06...."has something wrong with it." and it got me thinking of reloading for mine. i reload for all my rifles except for my 17 machII and my 30-06. the only reason i dont reload for my 30-06 is because i shoot the thing maybe once or twice every 3 years or so. (the gun is so gorgeous i just leave it in the back of the safe) but i thought instead of spending my money on another project i would just for up a pet load for that rifle.
i was thinking along the lines of a 168gr or greater trying to do close to 3000 fps
so let me know what you think and some of your pet loads.

p.s. the rifle is a browning a bolt medallion with a 22" barrel, wood stock, and i shaved the trigger spring just a touch.

I have a nice load for 155 smk(new style) Palmas or Amax using 50.7 grains of Varget. Also, 175 smk's running around 55grns IMR 4350. (work up to these) Pretty mild and consistant loads, running around 3/4 to one MOA out of my Rem700 22" BDL.
Nothing near 3k though..=P

Your gonna have to push them HARD to get 3K out of the 22". Might not be safe. $.02

You won't get 3K from a 168 in a 22" barrel, you will have pressure issues first.

H4350 and H4895 are two of the best suited powders for the 30-06, hands down. You should easily be able to work up a a very nice load with a 168gr and H4350.

I do use a bit of RL19 with 180's if I don't have any H4350 and it too does pretty well in my rifle.

I would start with H4350 and find a bullet the rifle will shoot well. Chances are you will be able to easily find a good load with this powder.

The only way to get 3000 fps is to go with a 125 gr. bullet, but work up slowly.

You might give RL 17 a try for powder. I'm seeing an honest 140 fps increase with 168 to 180 gr. bullets over 4350 and Win 760 at safe pressures.

German Salazar is a huge fan of the '06, and shoots it in competition. Periodically, he posts articles on 6mmBR's website. You might go to his website and search for his very informative articles on the 30/06. Here is the link:

You can get really close to 3000 fps with a 150 gr and a max charge of IMR 4064 in a 22" barrel. I have found my best accuracy and velocity with 51.2 to 52 grs IMR 4064 and 150 gr bullets.

I dont know what kind of rifle you have but I can tell you that hornadys 165 grain spire point really shoots outstanding out of any 30-06 I have shot using the usual ball powders available today. No real secret recipe but they shoot almost as good as match bullets. PS: If you dont want to shoot it because it is too pretty then ship it to me for testing.LOL

IMR 4350 most excellent in 30-06
57.0 with 165gr Sierra BT

Fed 210 primer in FC brass duplicates Fed Prem loads

My "pet" load, being my most accurate load, is:
Federal Brass
Federal 210M primer
47 grains H4895 powder (.5 grains less than maximum according to current Hodgdon reloading website).
Sierra 168 grain BTHP Match bullet
Velocity = 2825
Rifle is Remington 700 with 26" 5R Hart barrel
Result is very accurate bullet for distances to 1000 yards + .
I have never had a pressure indication from this combination, even with a heavily fouled barrel.
As with all loads, work yours up please.

150g SIerra btsp
52g of IMR 4064
Pick a primer
Seat the bullet .010 off the lands
Safe for 7400's also

Bolt gun load
150g Hornady btsp, and the 150g Hornady flat base is my favorite or a partition
59g of IMR 4350
Rem 9 1/2

165g. The 165g Speer bt is my favorite, and 165g Hornady flat base thinks it is a partition. These two bullets are a can openers on deer.
57g of IMR 4350

180g Nosler ballistic tip, 180g Sierra btsp, 180g Hornady BTsp
56-58g of H4350
Win primer
Use Tough brass as I found the accuracy node at peak pressure
these bullet saw up very large hogs on quartering shots, similar to a chain saw!

195g Hornady BTSP is a premiere bullet for elk
I shot AA3100, but R#19 in todays market is close.
I would work up a load with R#26 with a cci 250, then a Fed 215
This is one heck of a bullet.

Some cool loads, RL-17 under a 165 grain Ballistic Tip .....58.0 grains I think was @3000 fps or just under.
Staball 6.5 loading, I have the same bullet under 60.0 grains but have not chronoed' it yet but I suspect 3K as well. RL-26 if you can get it is approaching 2900 (not quite) with a 180 grain Ballistic tip or Accubond.
