Past rifle selling regrets, "I never should have sold my...."

Of the 4 I've sold in the last 40 years the one I regret a lot was an Original
HK-93. I sold it for 1000 in the early 90s.

I was 20 years old in 1974 when I bought my first Weatherby rifle. It was in 300 WM.. What made this rifle "special" was 2 very unique things about it! 1.) it was "made in Germany".. This rifle "reeked" of quality! The bluing was very dark and 'deeply rich">>>the best I have ever seen! It was the same type of bluing that you would have seen on a Winslow rifle, if you were fortunate enough to have the wherewithal back then to purchase one; and 2.) I cut my teeth on reloading with this gun! I bought my first press, used "once fired brass (that I fired) and H4831 Military surplus powder from Hodgdon's... I have NO IDEA of the charge or speed (no chronos avail back then that I knew of) but I shot BOTH 130 and 150 gr bullets. It was VERY accurate! But like a Dim-Wit, when I wanted another gun, I traded it in for something else>>I am not sure, but I believe it was on a Rem Mod. 600 Magnum in.350 Rem Mag! Another rifle I never should have parted with!! But I was a kid!

When I was young and dumb (well dumber) I bought a funny rifle/shotgun at a pawn shop. It had a strange German cal rifle that I couldn't get ammo for.I brought to a gun shop and the owner told me the ammo would have to be custom made and the shotgun barrels were probably unsafe. He traded a new 44 blackhawk,a few boxes of ammo and a complete reloading kit,I was in hog heaven. Later I found out the Drilling was on the wall with a $6000 price tag.I went to talk to him and it was already sold.He gave me my first Blue Book and my best lesson.(this was early 60's)

Wow. A friend of mine bought an HK91 in the early 80's, it had the early style receiver, took 2 parts to turn it full select fire. Not that he ever did that ;) I guess those were pretty rare, I wonder what its worth now.

FN Mauser in .257 Roberts. Bought it from my Barber, it was his deceased Father's. Don't think it was ever fired and nor did I. The receiver was not D&T'ed and I didn't want to bother having it done then. Traded it in on a blued Redhawk when they first came out. :-[

Here is a partial list..... a pristine Springfield 03A4, an M1 Garand, an M1 Carbine that still had some cosmoline on it. And a Stevens 84C 22 bolt action..... strickly as a sentimental thing. ::) WD

A 1992 Remington 700 BDL Classic in .220 Swift that I killed the biggest buck with in my life in 1994. Yep, using a 55 BT right in the neck, he never knew what hit him. Darn thing shot like a custom rifle! Neil Jones trigger job and just a perfect rifle. I still think about that one and it was one bad mistake on my part..

Enjoyed your post re: German Weatherby. I also bought one, in 1964. Stated with H4831 for $1.50/lb but went to Norma 205 which was special ordered. Still remember the chronograph reading of 3302fps with a Hornady 180 and a 7/8" 3shot grp at 200yds. It was a beautiful rifle and one that also taught me a lot about reloading, as it did you. Killed everything I used it for with Hornady, old lathe turned Partitions, and Speer 200s.
Best wishes and thanks for your post.
Bill

A 1911 45. New in the box, the mags had not been un-wraped cheese cloth covered in cosmoline. I only had it for a month and sold it at the next gun show and made $200 on the deal. I was stupid for selling selling it.

Kind of surprising to see such fondness for the good old Remington 700s.

My "lost one" is a no-name .22 bolt action my Dad helped me restore from real ragged shape. Probably circa 1930s. I inlet a new stock and reblued all the metalwork in the back of his hardware store. Was the gun I carried when I ran my trap lines before I was old enough for a pistol. Left it with the folks when I moved away. Probably not worth anything- not a clue where it went.

I *knew* this would turn into a decent thread, which is why it was started.

Well, except for the 'never made a mistake in my life' liars ;)

Moral to the story-

Today's 'junk', is tomorrows 'gold'.

A 70's era Ruger #1b in 25-06. Nice wood and accurate enough without any of the "normal" accuracy fixes. Traded a Ruger Target M77 mkII in 25-06 for it, and then traded the #1b for a Rem 700 in 7mm SAUM. Got rid of the 7mm SAUM and wish I still have the #1b. I love single shots for some reason I can't really explain.... I also got rid of all my 25-06 stuff around the same time. Oh well.

I keep looking in the safe at a couple of .22's I don't shoot (52D and 40X), and close the door quickly before I do something stupid.

Two cherry Remington 541 t's. My Best friend's Dad sweet talked me into selling both of them, and now they are safe queens never to see the range again. I'm always looking for a clean 541, but it's hard to find one equal to the ones I let go.

I did recenlty liberate an Anschutz 54 target model from him, but he won't let the 541's go. UGH! Sellers regret is an aweful thing.

Good shooting.

Well i started out hunting with a Remmy 760 gamemaster in 308 at 12 years old. Dad and my brother were shooting 30-06 and i felt i was carrying an inferior caliber and i needed a 06 for the knock down power . Well i spent two miserable PA winters knocking on doors and shoveling sidewalks and driveways to save enough money to buy a Remmy 30-06 in a Model 6. Gun was gorgeous and had Dark wood grain. I used her for a few seasons and soon found out i was a bolt action guy. This was the start of my Bigger means Better and premium bullet career. First mistake was selling that 308. Second mistake was 25 years later selling that mint Model 6 for $400 to buy a Remmy 7mm08.I went from a 308 all the way up to the ultra mags and Weatherby mags and learned they do nothing that a 243,7mm08, or a 308 will do here in PA. I still own many of the thumpers for long range hunting and large game.

A Sako 7x57 and a Marlin 336A are the only two rifles I really regret getting rid of. I had a beautiful S&W Model 27 in the 80's too--wish I still had it. But it's not that big a deal. Over the years I have enjoyed shooting and hunting with many great rifles, shotguns, revolvers and pistols and consider myself very fortunate. I did have a fabulous Perazzi MX8 once too.... :-\ And a couple Ljutics, and another Smith, a couple 1911's, and a Sako .222.... :-[
