Past rifle selling regrets, "I never should have sold my...."

I Drafted on one of those Kawasakis from Hoover Dam to Kingman. We made it in about 35 minutes, averaging 135 mph. I was on a Moto Guzzi V7 Sport. On my own 125 was max. Back then Hwy 93 was a two lane.

Ruger tang saftey 22-250 HB that shot Remington factory loaded ammo with55grain pointed soft points into one hole. Accuracy fell off and it may have needed a new barrel or maybe just a new load.

A colt gold cup, a good one. I usually sell everything eventually. That one and a model 29 smith are the only 2 I regret. I never worry about rifles, you can build good ones, but factory stuff is luck of the draw.

10” barrel Freedom Arms 44 mag that I used for IHMSA silhouette! Gun would shoot around 1 1/4” groups at 100! Miss that gun!!

Thompson center encore in 300 win mag with a heavy barrel! Stupid me!! And a weatherby vanguard in 257 weatherby! Stupid stupid!!

A Remington 700 BDL in 6.5 Rem mag, made in the late 60's IIRC. Traded it for an Artillery Luger. Had to fork over $75 cash to boot.

The list is long,
it seems I'd get something really nice keep it a while then get bored of it and either sell it or trade it for something new.
A couple would be a matching pair of Browning A bolt's in 22 lr and 22wm both with exhibition grade wood.
A German Mauser sporter in 22lr with AAA wood, a Cooper in 6PPC with AAA wood that shot as well as a custom build.
Car wise I sold a 70 Shelby GT 350 for $3500.00 that I got trading a 75 Chevy shortbed even up for it the year after high school.
The list goes on and on !

It’s not a sale, but I gave my father’s 760 30-06 and 870 12ga to my nephew recently. That was hard, but I know he will use them (occasionally, he lives in DC). Waiting to see if my girls could grow into them seemed a little silly. The only reason I could part with them is that my dad had bought me the same guns, so I can carry his legacy afield with those. Maybe I don’t regret giving those guns away, but they were probably my most prized possessions, and it was tough to let them go. I remember clearly how it felt as a kid when my dad would pass the shotgun to me during a hunt. Looking back, many of the best moments of my life were hunting with my dad, when I was a kid. For me, the biggest letdown of adulthood was that I didn’t get more time hunting with my dad.

I sold a Thompson TCR 83. That was regrettable

Smith & Wesson model 36(chief’s special) sure miss it, traded it back to my uncle for a model 28 Highway Patrolman 6 inch. He was a retired Navy dentist, traveled the world and had quite the amazing collection of firearms.

A Savage "gill gun" that I had as a teen & traded for a well-worn 10-22. It was a good old .22 that did shoot well, but more importantly it just felt right to handle & shoot (as long as I slung my left elbow low while shouldering:)). It took a truckload of rabbit & red squirrel. I've thought back on that rifle many times.

When I was young and dumb (well dumber) I bought a funny rifle/shotgun at a pawn shop. It had a strange German cal rifle that I couldn't get ammo for.I brought to a gun shop and the owner told me the ammo would have to be custom made and the shotgun barrels were probably unsafe. He traded a new 44 blackhawk,a few boxes of ammo and a complete reloading kit,I was in hog heaven. Later I found out the Drilling was on the wall with a $6000 price tag.I went to talk to him and it was already sold.He gave me my first Blue Book and my best lesson.(this was early 60's)

He knew what it was but was not about to tell you. A DRILLING? hmnnnn !

A 70's era Ruger #1b in 25-06. Nice wood and accurate enough without any of the "normal" accuracy fixes. Traded a Ruger Target M77 mkII in 25-06 for it, and then traded the #1b for a Rem 700 in 7mm SAUM. Got rid of the 7mm SAUM and wish I still have the #1b. I love single shots for some reason I can't really explain.... I also got rid of all my 25-06 stuff around the same time. Oh well.

I keep looking in the safe at a couple of .22's I don't shoot (52D and 40X), and close the door quickly before I do something stupid.

I had a 40x topped with a 36 Leupold. We would shoot aspirins every sunday morning pasted on a cardboard 2' x 2', for dimes at 100 yds. Mine enjoyed Eley 10 x red box.

I sold the two best BR rifles I built and regret it. One was a 40X, Brown stock, Hart barrel, PPC. The other was a Wichita Mini in a Six stock, Sherer barrel, also a PPC. I built a 45x2 7/8 on an early Ruger No 1 which I should have kept. I traded off a 1974 Marlin 45/70 which was one of the most accurate hunting rifles (at 100 yd) I have ever owned. As I approach my "golden years" I reckon I'll be selling some more, with regret. WH

I have a long long long list of guns that I would like to have back in a perfect world.
Hell, there are probably 50 + that other people on this forum own.

It's all in fun can't regret any of it though it's all part of the game.
