Palma Alliance 2018

I was thinking he has a good wxcuse for another rifle.

Nah, I've had the rifle too long, and its been too good to me to retire/replace. I just have to stop procrastinating and get a Riles 22mm front sight and the appropriate accessories.

I don’t think it’s started yet Marty, maybe the 25th?

Hope weather doesn’t affect travel plans for too many! I know one who got bumped to leaving tomorrow - our 24th - which will make it tricky as that’s their 25th. Rhode saw it coming, left Saturday & missed all the kerfuffle.

Yep, just sightseeing for now. Will have 2 practice days on Friday & Saturday, then the matches start on Sunday. I was happy to miss the blizzard, wife was less happy...

Here's the view from the 1000-yard line at Trentham:

Oliver is amazing person and a good friend. He sent a text today and said "Today is the 20th anniversary of his coming to the United States". Hope he is able to stay at the top in the coming week.

Here’s a link to the page showing competition events scheduled thru Feb. 4th.

Seems some of our folks have elected to not participate in the individual matches that started the week’s activities at Trentham. Team events coming up!

It looks like there is some pretty healthy competition going in NZ, but then, any international competition will test ones abilities. Personally, I've never had the mental stamina to manage a week of high level competition.

Got a quick video from erud. The wind was blowing. Looked like some gusty conditions. Are they shooting the 5v target?

Judging from the scores, and what I could tell from the programs, I would say they are using the 5V target.

Yes, 5V scoring. NZ shoots on the ICFRA target system, with the following twists:
  • at 500 yards, they use the 600Y ICFRA target, so 500Y is a fair bit "easier" than 600Y
  • the ICFRA long range target at 900Y & 1000Y is virtually identical to the US long range target
    • the sole difference is that the ICFRA LR target uses a 32" diameter "4"/"9" ring versus the US LR 30" diameter
    • all other scoring ring diameters are identical to the US LR target
  • similar to the Aussies, they actually put up an F-Class target, so that they can mix and match F-Class and sling shooters on any target. The target markers have no idea whether a F-Class or irons shooter is firing, they just indicate the target value as "X", "V", "5", "4", etc..
    • For an F-Class shooter, the "V" is scored as 6 points. So the highest possible score for a ten shot match is 60 points plus 10 Xs
    • For a sling shooter, "X"s and "V"s are scored the same, they are worth an iron sight "V" (but of course your smile is a bit bigger if your "V" is actually a half-minute "X"!!). So the highest possible score for a ten shots match is 50 points plus 10 Vs
It's great to see a good number of visitors to Trentham this year, even if I am forced to watch from the other side of the world. I hope everybody is enjoying the incredibly challenging and wonderful conditions that the range has to offer. I remember on my second visit to Trentham firing a 5 and a 3 as my first two convertible sighters at 900 yards in reasonably challenging but not insane conditions and my scorekeeper (a very good NZ shooter) asking me if I wanted to convert both. At the time I figured he was playing games with me and just said "no" and proceeded to shoot. When my string was over I asked him if he was serious and he replied that yes he was, and this is the part I remember to this day, "there are things out there a lot worse than a 3!".

Thanks for the ‘color’ Daniel! Rest assured you’re not alone...
