Optimal case to push 147 ELD?

I also have been thinkin about something very similar, that 150g SMK has my interest. Without going magnum..(prc, or saum) I think it would be fun to do a 7.5 twist 6.5x55 swede.

The Swede was originally designed for long heavy bullets. In Europe they hunt with it using bullets like the 160gr Woodleigh. That's why almost all SAAMI spec 6.5x55 reamers have a ton of freebore.

As an easy wildcat, how about a 6.5slr improved. Runs 140 Berger's easily @ 2950 without hammering brass or barrel.

The improved Blows out the shoulder a bit, and keeps the long neck, all in a short action mag length.
Brass options are 308 lapua Palma as the perfect parent case - small primer.

It would be a pretty cool long action standard bolt face rifle. Cheap awesome brass(lapua),case capacity to run a slower h4831. I would assume 2900fps shouldn’t be an issue with modern action with 150smk, 147 or 143.

Maybe. Probably not gonna get much more than that tho. I was a little disappointed in the speeds I got with 140s in the 6.5x55 I had a while back. Thought it would be faster. Couldn't hit 3000

If it’s 1000yards and beyond I would skip 6.5mm and build a 7mm something. Straight 284 being stupidly easy to get working with 180gr pills and easily available brass.

If hell bent on a 6.5mm what about the 6.5SLR??

The 55 will never give mag speeds but that 150smk at .713bc at even 2850fps is impressive. No doubt a Saum, prc or even a 6.5-284 might be better suited to push that pill... the Swede definitely has a cool factor

I have been following other threads regarding the 150gr SMK.

If I could get my hands on some here in Australia I would be going for a 6.5x284 to try and keep up with the 7mmSAUM’s for Fclass shooting.

However it appears when pushed fast from bigger cases with fast twists the bullets can blow up during a hot long shot string.

If fired in slower twists stability appears to marginal. I’m waiting to see what the optimal twist rate is with thoughts to pushing this bullet to 2950fps or even a higher node above 3000fps without jacket failures.

Ive kinda heard the same thing. That bullet might be too good to be true. Time will tell. Would be great if they shot like the numbers add up though huh??

Speaking to a well respected shooter here in Aus he’s advice if going down that path would be slowest twist that they remain stable (I’ve been thinking 7.75tw) and to choose 5R rifling to keep jacket distortion to a minimum.

But agree, on paper the 150 at 3000ish FPS would be awesome......... IF it can work and be consistently accurate.

Supply of the Sierra 150's in Australia is a problem. I haven't had any luck getting them.

Talking with my gunsmith today, he told me he's already spun up 8, 6.5 improved
Yup you guessed it based off the creed.

If i was wanting to push bigger heavier 6.5s id go straight to the 6.5×284. But honestly ive not seen anything saying above 140gr really doing great in 6.5. My 6.5 shooting 140s at 2834 fps has done really well out to 1k. Going to try the 142 smks once it starts to warm up.

My 6.5x55 was also on a Win action and bolt face fitted fine with Lapua, Rem, Win brass.
Never had any kind of problem.

Ive been playing around with the idea of trying to get 260 AI performance out of a more SA friendly case. And sizing it just right to get to the 3k FPS mark easier than the 260AI can.
Ive gotten to 3K FPS with my 260 AI, RL-26 and 28inch barrel. But it was on the upper end of pressure limits. Its doable and I think 260 AI is the direction you wanna go with. Its super easy to fireform for, and once your case are good 2900+ is easy.
