Both of my Grandfathers fought in WWI. One was a member of the 40 and 8 Club. He was a farrier, and the 40 and 8 Club was so named for the markings on their transport boxcars. 40 horses and 8 men. The US sent Cavalry troops into combat early in the war.
He brought home a rare firearm with him. It is an over and under, but the 16 ga barrel is on top, and an 8mm something rifled barrel underneath. It's a box lock. "Mustache" fences for additional strength.
His wife, my Grandmother, gave it to me, but my parents just brought it home and stuck it in a closet. I was preoccupied with my 2nd tour in RVN. Never knew until my Father died, and my Mother went into an assisted living last summer.
It is fully engraved, and has deer and birds engraved on both sides, Cocking indicators, and claw mounts. Of course the scope and rings never made it.
I am celebrating today, I had a chamber cast made and sent it off, and we now know what the chambering is. God Bless the Internet!
It is an 8mmx57Rmm X 360. CH4D had dies in stock, and Dave there was able to tell me a possible parent case. That is the 9,3mm X 72mm Rimmed. The components came yesterday. I ruined the first attempt, but got a second rough formed this evening. God Bless Imperial Sizing Die Wax! It is the .318 JS bore, and I found a box of 200gr small bore 8mm bullets at Cabela's.
Tomorrow, about 10gr of 2400 and it will fire again for the first time since 1917 or '18.
I am too happy for words.
