One hundred years later...

Both of my Grandfathers fought in WWI. One was a member of the 40 and 8 Club. He was a farrier, and the 40 and 8 Club was so named for the markings on their transport boxcars. 40 horses and 8 men. The US sent Cavalry troops into combat early in the war.

He brought home a rare firearm with him. It is an over and under, but the 16 ga barrel is on top, and an 8mm something rifled barrel underneath. It's a box lock. "Mustache" fences for additional strength.

His wife, my Grandmother, gave it to me, but my parents just brought it home and stuck it in a closet. I was preoccupied with my 2nd tour in RVN. Never knew until my Father died, and my Mother went into an assisted living last summer.

It is fully engraved, and has deer and birds engraved on both sides, Cocking indicators, and claw mounts. Of course the scope and rings never made it.

I am celebrating today, I had a chamber cast made and sent it off, and we now know what the chambering is. God Bless the Internet!

It is an 8mmx57Rmm X 360. CH4D had dies in stock, and Dave there was able to tell me a possible parent case. That is the 9,3mm X 72mm Rimmed. The components came yesterday. I ruined the first attempt, but got a second rough formed this evening. God Bless Imperial Sizing Die Wax! It is the .318 JS bore, and I found a box of 200gr small bore 8mm bullets at Cabela's.

Tomorrow, about 10gr of 2400 and it will fire again for the first time since 1917 or '18.

I am too happy for words.:D:D:D:D:D:D:D:D:D:D:D:D:D

One of my grandfathers and one of my wife's fought in WWI too. I don't have anything from that time except a few pictures. Sounds like a nice rifle. Treat it gently. The oldest thing I have is a 1958 Browning Auto-5 my Dad bought new. It only gets to fire mild target loads.

I'll bet you are happy! I'd be doing backflips.

One of my Gfathers was Army Aircorp,WWI.He bought a commercial 1911,in '17 which he flew with.Still a GREAT shooter,H&G 200g swc,5 g of 231 is tackdriving medicine.Good luck with the O/U,sounds like a fun project.

That is a great story and have something passed down that is priceless. It makes my day to come across hearing things like this.

Thank all of you for the assistance and information. "Pop" was 16, lied about his age to enlist. 40 or 8 makes a bit more sense. I had thought to use 32-40 starting load data; but is very helpful to know the 150gr bullet is the choice.

NECG has a tremendous assortment of rings, and some suggestions for scopes. They suggest the Leupold 2-7X scope. Owner Mark Cromwell thinks it "fits the style and dimensions of the O/U.

It is a C. GUNDERMANN from DUSSELDORF. This variation of the O/U is called HOFBUCHSENMACHER.

It is moshe-Moshe (Shone Tribe from Zimbabwe). That translates to Good-Good! I am going to get the kid over one day and post some pictures. The engraving is just stunning.

thanks, got to go load some ammunition.

Neat Post Idaho, I hope you get some pictures up and follow up after you get to shoot it. What a treasure to have.

One word of caution on the shotgun barrels, they are more than likely 2.5 inch chambers and not 2.75 inches. I have the same combination Drilling from roughly the same time period, and mine are 2.5 inch chambers. Please be safe and not sorry, these are nice guns.

My wife's grandfather was in WWI also. He was a locomotive engineer. When he passed, we found the original paper issued to him by the French government authorizing him to drive the French locomotives. So, he probably pulled some of those cars around the country. Neat piece of history...

I need to thank Pirate Ammo here.

The Germans actually had two 8x57 rimmed cartridges in 1900. The standard 8x57 Military cartridge in a rimmed version. Then, there is mine, the 8x57R/360. It looks like a slightly smaller 32-40, straight taper case. To further complicate the search, they offered a bullet with a slight step in the bullet. It was to hold pressures down in the older O/U and drilling rifle chambers.

He was kind enough to send me a box of the standard RWS ammunition with a stepped bullet. The nose of the bullet just starts into the rifling.

This is going to be a looooooooong load project. The barrel has a flip type rear with two leaves. Regulating it will be fun.

One of my boys is coming over Monday with his two boys (1 and almost-3) and will take pictures of both the 405 and this jewel to show here.
