Old Yeller 3rd returns

My daughter was given a historically interesting rifle. It is a Superior Action made by Ross Sherman, and was smithed and owned by Fred Sinclair, painted by his wife, named Old Yeller 3rd and campaigned in the early 1980's. Paige was not able to go with me tonight, but I could not wait to hit the fields. I asked my son to join me and we took Old Yeller 3rd which is a 22PPC and a Hart 6mmBR. We had fits with the wind initially. It always takes me a bit at the beginning of the season to remember how far to hold...not much in the way of windflags on this farm!

My son got one with the 6mm at 525 yards, through the back of the foot and into the chest. Nice shot. I got four others. i had one bad hit with the 6mm. I got three others with the 22PPC off a Mcfadden tripod. One at 275, one at 350 and one at 415. This was the baptism for the old rifle, bringing it back into use. I am not a BR guy, but i am really going to like this rifle for chucks. I am getting right about 3500 FPS with a 50 grain Vmax.

So, let it be known, MrMajestic and IMMORTAL, I may be way behind, but i am now in the game!

And one last interesting shot....525 yards, chuck standing with "hand" in front of heart....right thru the hand and thru the chuck too!

Awesome shooting snert. Nice set up you got too.

Thanks...and I got it all at a fire sale price. that's my story and I am sticking to it!!

If you can afford a NY hunting license (ungodly cost for out-of-state) I would welcome you.

100 dollars
Yes, you an hunt Sundays
AR's are now considered "assault rifles in NY" and must be registered (so no one has one anymore...). I honestly do not know about hunting with one...I know you can hunt with a semi, and are limited to 5 round mags, but the SAFE act is such a pain in the BUTT I simply made all my similar rifles go away. (Just prior to the enactment of the FFL laws in 2012)

Looks like you had a high time of it, snert!

Was up chasing gobblers & trout, sorry I didn't call! Started on fireforming another batch of Lapua .243 brass to .22-243AI, and managed to give one chuck a headache in the process. My lil red machine done me proud in scouting an active hole, and a 75Amax took care of the rest...

Will holler at ya during the week!

snert,
Always nice to see one of Fred's rifles that Becky painted still going strong. I would like to say "thank you" for all the former Sinclair employees.
From a former Sinclair now Berger Bullet Tech ( one of the three on the Berger tech staff )
Take care and good shooting!

Fredo,

Take a good look at G-hog 2nd from left. Note missing front foot. After I picked this one up I recalled shooting at one last year, "missing" and seeing it grabbing at its foot as it hustled to the hole. I wonder if I hit it last year, survived? Same area...

Nice work Snert! Thanks for sharing. I was at camp over the weekend hanging out with a couple of Turkey hunters. I took one with me in the afternoon for some chucking. Got three to take me to 16. 228, 280 and 282 however I missed a crow at 330 yds. :-[

I've got a tripod set-up similar to your rig there. My wife got me this one for my birthday, and I love it. It's a heavy pro photog type, but man is it steady. From sitting position with a chair it's darned near like a bench. Taller standing position is still good.

Here's one of my target rich environments. I try to whack the close ones with my Bee or 222, and then haul out the BR for long shots. jd

Fred it's good to see the Pokester is still doin good.

Im jealous of gh hunting thing, it looks like a blast.

Thanks Nick, he likes 'chucks about as much as a coon, LOL.

Snert, that is pretty wild! I wouldn't doubt if "ol' stumpy" made it thru on a limp!!! There are a few spots where I see chucks that just aren't in a position to get shot. See them every year, and they get names, too. Most have a four letter prefix... :o

Love the tripod setup. Been messing with one myself lately, seems to be fairly solid. Manfrotto carbon legs & head, w/ Triclawps rifle saddle on top. Shot about 20 starlings from it over the weekend, holding a .22LR...

Keep the cool 'chuck whackin' pics coming!!!

Those are some awesome photos. I always wondered what a "squirrel" looks like in its natural (soon to get blasted) state. I so want to move west, but then summer comes and the breezes blow and the grass greens, and I cannot pry myself away from the dairy farmland. Oh to have TWO lives to live!

That is a fine set-up tripod. I have used a survey tripod with an Outers rest on it, total cost of $25, but because it would not "pan" easily, I went to the Mcfadden. I have been very happy with it. i have the short legs too, but because of a back injury I tend to stand more than sit now...

Love those 40XBrs. To me that is the definition of perfect.

Fredo, give me a call late in the week. I might be here, might not...depends on needs in PA. If I am here, I plan to hunt.
