A good friend of mine had the same epiphany I did...when it comes to hunting prarie dogs....high speed , light weight is king for short/ mid range!!! He is most certainly NOT a velocity guy...he runs 105's out of his 243 at around 2850 - 2900 FPS. BUT....he has 3500+ rounds on the BBL and on the SAME 50 pieces of Lapua brass. Still shoots bug holes and BBL looks good ( He had another tube chambered up so it is ready to go when this one goes south..the smith borescoped it and said it looked very good). He also has a New Savage duel port something or other 1-8 twist 6mm BR.....one of those BR or "F" class guns. I told him to leave his 243 alone and try some 55/58's and H335 out of his 6 BR. He took it up to 37+ grains without any noticeable PSI, but settled on 36 grains......BUG HOLES and zero PSI signs.
He tells me he is getting just south of 4000 FPS with the 58 VMax. It didn't really soak in right away, but the next day I thought ......4000 FPS in a 6 BR!!!!! So, I called him and told him his chrorno is messed up. He brought the gun by and I ran 3 through my Magnetospeed. 3978, 3985, 3985!!!! WOW!!!
I am impressed!!!!! Wondering why in the world I would chamber up a new varment tube in 6 -6.5-47L or Dasher when a 6 Br is capable of this.
Just rambling out loud,
Tod
