OK...so, I'm impressed!!

A good friend of mine had the same epiphany I did...when it comes to hunting prarie dogs....high speed , light weight is king for short/ mid range!!! He is most certainly NOT a velocity guy...he runs 105's out of his 243 at around 2850 - 2900 FPS. BUT....he has 3500+ rounds on the BBL and on the SAME 50 pieces of Lapua brass. Still shoots bug holes and BBL looks good ( He had another tube chambered up so it is ready to go when this one goes south..the smith borescoped it and said it looked very good). He also has a New Savage duel port something or other 1-8 twist 6mm BR.....one of those BR or "F" class guns. I told him to leave his 243 alone and try some 55/58's and H335 out of his 6 BR. He took it up to 37+ grains without any noticeable PSI, but settled on 36 grains......BUG HOLES and zero PSI signs.

He tells me he is getting just south of 4000 FPS with the 58 VMax. It didn't really soak in right away, but the next day I thought ......4000 FPS in a 6 BR!!!!! So, I called him and told him his chrorno is messed up. He brought the gun by and I ran 3 through my Magnetospeed. 3978, 3985, 3985!!!! WOW!!!

I am impressed!!!!! Wondering why in the world I would chamber up a new varment tube in 6 -6.5-47L or Dasher when a 6 Br is capable of this.

Just rambling out loud,

Tod

You could pick up even more speed with a 13.5 or 14 twist. Although the splat factor out of the 8 twist would be impressive.

That's 70 loads per piece of brass! o_O
Yep.....and ..I Think he is down to 40 cases. But really......they are powder puff loads!!!! Right in there with the 6 BR.

I just ordered up a 31 inch 12 twist. Should be good up to the 87 grainers and work good with the 55/58's also. I simply need to decide .....

Dasher.......have a mountin of formed brass and dies
6-6.5-47l......have the dies
6 mm BR

Brian Litz put an end to that myth a while back. Yes a slow twist is faster, something like 3-4 fps per inch of twist. So 15-20 fps faster going from an 8 to 14.

In my 14T 24" barrels I got 3,550 FPS with a 70Gr'er and could reach 3,650 FPS with a 65V MAX but they shot better around 3,500 FPS...I never did try any 58 or the nosler 55 .
Good to here they are accurate out of the 1-8 How long is the barrel on it?
I kind of been building one in my head and can never decide what twist....I think it's going to be hard o beat the 1-8 all the way around..

Like I said...I have a 12 twist on it's way. I guess I am not looking for off the charts speed, just something reasonable the will shoot small. I can't seem to shake that personality trait that says I NEED to have bug hole accuracy. 3/4 MOA with NBT 70's out of my 6-47L just don't cut it.

I think his factory Savage has a 30 inch tube, but I am not sure on that. I am sure that the Savage guru's here can fill in the blank on that question.

Of course, I missed Brunos 15% off sale!!

The 6BR and AA2300 is close to 4000 with the 55gr. bullet, I don`t see why H335 can`t do it too.

I`m gonna try the 6BR AI and AA2230 with the 55`s just because....

Sounds like he has some freebore in that 8 twist.....

Phil.

I guess I never asked him about the free bore. I know his usual load is the 105 Hybrid, but I don't know if he is able to stuff them or if he is jumping them. That would be another question that the local Savage gurus could answer.

I wouldn't count on that. I have two 12 twist 6MM AI's, a Krieger and a Lilja, and neither one can handle the 87 V-Max even with pretty stiff loads. The 75 V-Max works great in those barrels. My 10 twist PacNor 6 BR does very well with the 87's and once past 300 yards has less drop and more velocity than the 75's do in that rifle. If I'm expecting shots beyond 300-400 yards I'll grab the 10 twist 6BR every time.

My best 6BR for varmints is a 10 twist. It will handle 87gr vmax reasonably well if the weather is warm, but really smokes the 75s and back when you could get the 58s in the zombie pack for dirt cheap they were little lasers. Not sure why everyone thinks you need an 8 twist for varmints. The OP is right, if you're looking for splat factor velocity is much more important than mass. Simple physics dictates that, of course it also dictates that much past 330yds, you might want that mass back so that the velocity stays up!

If it isn't too late, I would consider calling your bbl mfr/ guy and drop it to
a 10tw. Options are the thing to have when reloading. Ya just never know when you might want some extra retained velocity...... ..... and bbls being what they are, I've read enough first hand posts abt what their bbl will/won't stabilize that are directly opposed to another shooter's experience. I have a 6mm 7.5 Krieger that I hope is fast and will stabilize the new Tubb bullet as well as the heavier Bergers, Bibbs et al.

I have many, many fast twist tubes for multiple guns. If I need more for LR/ELR I simply switch guns. My fast twist Dasher, with a powder puff load, started blowing up 65 V-Maxes yesterday while PD hunting. Buy the time I quit it was 2 of 3 not making it to target.

I actually had a great time with my 6-47L and the 70 NBT. GINORMAS SPLAT FACTOR!!! But, only had 50 rounds of it, so it was back to the 108's, the 105's in my Dasher, and the 140's in my 6.5 WSSM.

Nope....I am actually having 2nd thoughts about changing my plans from a 13.5 twist to a 12 twist. But...its to late now!! Just need to find a reamer quick, as my smith only takes a week to get me shooting from a pile of parts freshly delivered in the BIG BROWN TRUCK!!!!!
