No Bullet Fire Forming 6PPC?

I filled some cases to the neck with Red Dot (fastest power I have), stuffed in a toilet paper plug, and fired in my rifle (fire forming bbl). The cases were not blown out enough to give me a good shoulder to turn to. I have heard of folks using wax or soap plugs to get a bit more pressure, but I'd sure like to hear from someone that has done this before I try it. Thanks for any input

Make sure you put that red dot up and far away when you start reloading your 6PPC. Had a shooter forget to switch the powder out after Fireforming. It was a catastrophic for the shooter and rifle.

If I could recommend something it would be to get a hydro form die.

Good luck!

There’s a gentleman that does form brass and does a superb job, that being Darrell Jones . Look up DJSBRS and see if he can get to it AND be done perfectly and have no doubts that they’re right. I’m sure that he has done ten’s of thousands of these and is well known on this Forum .

ok i fire form with no bullet in 6mm dasher and 30br, BUT NOT WITH my 6ppc. i simply use a 220 russian load with a cheap 6mm bullet at the lands.
since you have a ff bbl...that would seem to be the way to go.

That's not possible, or safe, with a tight neck chamber. Since the OP mentioned turning necks, your method would be impossible and dangerous if he managed to get a round stuffed in the chamber.

Surely he would have the sense to turn the necks first. I expand the necks, turn them, size the neck, load a bullet at hard jam and shoot , simple. I use them as foulers, over several matches you have new cases and no extra rounds down a barrel.

did i say my necks were unturned, no . so do not make assumptions. i answered in context of his question.
i expand and turn my necks, then with a non br primer, non br powder and non br bullets load a safe stiff load based on 220 russian case, to fire form in my old bbl..chambered by the same smith as my current bbl, with the same reamer.

I also expand the necks, turn them, then load a bullet at hard jam and shoot.
However, if you are looking to fireform without a bullet, the cream of wheat method works well.
I use 10-12 gr of Win 231 pistol powder, then fill with cream of wheat. I top with a small piece of tissue and fireform.
The cream of wheat provides the pressure needed to fully form the shoulders.

No need to get bent out of shape. I was mearly pointing out that a 6mm bullet in an unturned neck in a tight neck chamber(the OP's case!) doesn't work. You didn't specify whether you turned necks or not. Makes no matter to me what you do.

It's no wonder I avoid posting on forums anymore...

I wouldn't let what he says influence me. your post was appropriate.

It's no wonde
you had it right originally and should have stopped there.
simple math. expand a 220 russian case to 6mm, seat a 6 mm bullet and
it WILL NOT CHAMBER in a common 6 ppc 262 chamber. you confused everything else but 6ppc with a POSSIBLE issue, but we're are talking 6ppc so your comment was out of place as posted. plain and simple.

Next time I have to make PPC brass, I'm just going to run some 6.5 Grendel brass into my body sizing die, neck turn, then just shoot it.

Are any/many competitive shooters using Lapua made 6.5 Grendel brass to make 6PPC? Cause I'm planning to do another 300 pieces of 6PPC fairly soon. Assuming the brass thickness and everything else is the same ("should be"), this might be the easiest method.

It's Lapua brass, so It would make sense to me that they would use the same process to make both the Russian and Grendel brass.
