If you do not have a 30-06, at least have one to know how versatile it is. From 110 gr. screamers to 200+ gr. thumpers. I have had a few and there is always a place for at least one in your armory. Then you will be ready for a 300 wsm , then a ELR rifle cartridge if that's where you want to go.

The 06 is one of the most versatile cartridges around.

You already have a 7-08 and .45-70 so the gap needs to be filled When I hunted I liked the idea that if my ammo got lost I could get some more at any local shop. That would lead me to the 06, 300WM or 7mmRM (I had an 06 for out here in the west). If you aren't worried about ammo availability then there are 20 or 30 to choose from, not counting wildcats. Just about any of them will work. Decide on long or short action and take your pick.

ODCR did my last 30-06 with a full 26" barrel. Easily over 3K FPS with a 165 gr. and super accurate.

Currently have 22r, 223ar, 6bra, 6.5cm, 7-08 and 45-70. Not currently a hunter, mainly range/target shooter, but deer, elk and moose hunting are on my bucket list. Live in northeast and am an avid hand loader. Not averse to recoil and enjoy load development. Looking for suggestions on good caliber to add to my collection.

Since you're a target shooter, the real question is how far can you shoot? What is the longest range you have access to?

At a 100 yards, things get boring after a while, so people buy more stuff to keep it interesting. Been there done that. But, if you have access to a 600 or 1,000 yards, then you can really start learning ballistics and how to shoot. That's not a rabbit hole, its a whole different world. It's a hand loader heaven.

I'm in the process of building my 6th custom rifle. I've sold 4 of them.
