New Heavy Duty Bipod Modification

I visited Joe Updike ( http://www.accurateriflesystems.com/ ) the other day about some stock work and he showed me the new bi-pod modification unit he made to use components from the Sinclair Tactical bipod. I really like the Sinclair bi-pod with having a really wide stable side to side design but it's got a bit of slop forward and backward.

Randy Wise and Joe came up with this design which is really a stable front unit. Joe loaned me his to try this weekend on my new 15 7/8" pistol in 223 1000 yard gun at Rayners until mine is ready. I tried it out today checking my 100 yard zero, it does add a bit more weight to the gun which is a good thing. His still has the original rubber feet which I plan to change to an aluminum design when I get mine.

Very very stable, absolutely zero movement front to rear and side to side. It uses the pivoting center mount and also the nice adjustable legs for nearly any height elevation changes needed. It's not a fully adjustable bench-rest style rest but for the type of shooting we do changing benches and shooting multiple distances it's perfect. I think Randy had purchased a similar bi-pod of another brand and thought he could make a better one. I really like it so far.

This was the original Sinclair Bi-pod with folding collapsible legs. He is selling the machined aluminum center section to convert to the wide legged design. Very high quality work and he also can make custom changes to suit a particular need. His new aluminum chassis designs are some of the very best I've seen for long-range shooting off a bench or prone for many applications and gun types.

The fella that redesigned this has the Sinclair similar to this and he said it flexed too much. He combined the parts he liked from the tactical model and made a heavier non flexing center section. Nothing new just some redesign to make it better.

It's not perfect for everyone, it's not a BR rest, it's not a do all tactical model but for our long-range pistols we compete against the rifles with at the 235 to 1000 yard steel plate matches it fits the purpose.

With nothing to brace against the shoulder the pistols had a lot of movement with the flimsy versions and got bounce from regular bi-pods. I have only tried a few rounds to check my zero for tomorrow but Randy (created this) is running right with the top rifles so it seems to work for his needs.

I just thought others might like to see what Joe is making available, So many different disciplines of shooting, one don't like how the other does it, another thinks the other is cheating with using a certain type of rests or aids. Some say you're not a shooter if you're not doing it offhand, others say it has to be one hole groups in paper instead of shooting across multiple valleys and fields with all directions of wind hitting small steel plates.

Yes it's big and bulkier than the Harris, Atlas or Sinclair Tactical and a lot more manageable than the huge BR type rests those guys use. I started out shooting the 1000 yard matches with an open sighted XP-100 midgrip in 260rem, then added a 2 1/2 - 8 pistol scope, then an adjustable VGM mount, then a rifle scope, then a first gen rear grip stock. They have evolved into a heavy short barreled gun that is equal to rifles in accuracy and are far from what most consider a pistol but it's taking them to the limits on accuracy which is kinda neat considering the distances and small targets we're hitting.

It's creative enough to be very interesting, but I seldom shoot off of a bipod. This one looks so massive I thought it was a SEB when I first looked at it. Nice though.

I saw them in action yesterday, they are not massive, fairly light actually, adjust very easy. If you see the scores the guys using them shoot --- well --- that speaks for it self.
