New Garmin Chronographs

Just got mine. I noticed it seems to be a bit slower in velocity compared to my Magnetospeed v3. Wondering where it picks up the bullet at? It seemed down 20-40 fps and showed larger es/sd variations than i have seen with magnetospeed. Probably a setup issue? I think i had it aligned ok per the instructions. Will try it on the bench next time, i was prone in a field, may not have been perfectly aligned

Mine was right there with my Mag v3, within 10fps and from what I read from others that seems to be normal variance between differing units. I don't get super anal about direction, just eyeball it's pointed at the target and it's usually sitting about 12-15" to the side and about even with end of forearm. Guess time will tell as various shooters with different units do comparison.
I still like my $80 pro crono. Does everything I need it to do. Does Arrows, pellet rifles, and 5000fps on centerfires. Takes 3 minutes to set up and I've never had any issues with it in a thousand trips to the range over the last 10+ years.

The Garmin is nice sure, but not even close to being $600 cool...
Sadly it's probably got $30 in parts inside and I don't see development making up the difference. Clearly it's way over priced, but so was the LR. They just charge what the market will bear. I'm as guilty as the next person, I can afford the convenience so I pay the game.

when i first tried mine out next to my LR they were within 2fps every shot. that was off a bench

A fellow shooter did not think he was getting good velocities from his Garmin. We put mine on the bench with his. They both performed flawlessly.
Mine was .3 fps slower than his EVERY shot.....

When I first got my Garmin, the very first time out on the range I had my MangnetoSpeed mounted to compare recorded velocities. . . .and there was a couple other shooters next to me using their LabRadars where I just set my Garmin down next to them for a comparison. Where you set down the radar type chorono's makes a difference. See the numbers in the pics below:

We did that, plus a Labradar.
I think we are blessed to have all three. All three had small differences in the actual velocity but they were all consistent differences.

Hmmmm actually I just looked back and it could be a little slow. 20 shot string on the magneto was 3117 and 5 shots over the garmin was 3099. Too many variables though. Could be a small sample. Could be I had 25 through it when I recorded the data on the magneto. It was super clean with just 1 fouler with the garmin. I should compare them, but I dont think 10 or 20 fps matters as long as it is consistent. 17 fps is not why I missed!

Revisited mine. Only shot a few with two rifles
Magnetospeed to garmin - shot 1 2890 - 2886 shot 2 2909- 2902 So fairly close

Other gun 1: magneto 3219 to 3206 garmin. 2: magneto 3218 to 3205 garmin, and 3223 to 3214. So not bad. Close enough for me

I did miss one shot with the garmin however but i think it was too close to the barrel, not in the 5-15” away bracket. Once i moved it out it got the others fine. I like it

I tried mine out for the first time a few weeks ago. just set it about a foot to the left of my rifle (7mm Rem Mag) and fired away. I didn't notice till after I fired my second string that I had knocked the tripod to where it was aiming about 20 degrees off to the left. It still picked up all five shots. When I got to the range, I thought I had left it at home. It is so small, I didn't even see it in the range bag. I bought one of the plastic protective cases for it that stays on all the time. I've had just about every chrono except the radar. I really like this thing.
