New ELR world record!

Congratulations to Randy Wise for set new world record at Camp Atterbury. Randy made a cold bore hit and two follow up shots at 2158yards, with his stock savage action and barrel in an Accurate Rifles Systems chassis. This was done with a 338 Lapua mag. and 300gr. Berger hybirds. Congrats Randy20190823_105957.jpg sorry forgot to say this was at 2019 NRA NATIONALS ELR EVENT

And the shooting world collectively sighs as they now realize they should have bought a stock savage instead of that good-for-nothing bat. Don't tell your wives about this gentlemen.

Edited: Good Shooting. That really is amazing.

I just know, being a local to that range, that you cannot even come close to seeing that target from the firing line back there.

Truly impressive to watch that show, and to do this with nothing more than .338 Lapua is a serious feat, regardless of rifle pedigree.

That's one of the only matches I've ever watched (heard) from in front of the firing line. The 1,000 yard line of KD-6 where all the rest of the NRA Nat'ls are held is about 1/2 mile west of the KD-3 lines where these boys shoot. Since they sorta shoot past you from back there, a guy can hear the thump of the muzzles, echo/crack going downrange, and the occasional "ting" of an impact on that little target. All without it being a two way range.

Good times...

Perhaps Nat means you can't see the target without a high-power optic?

A couple seasons back, I shot at 2025 yards, confirmed with GPS. Target was 3' x 3' steel plate. I could see it just fine at 25X with a 5-40X March scope. Honestly, aiming was not a problem at all. After 3 bad misses that helped us get the wind and elevation right, I got 3 of the next 6 on the steel. NOTE: Cold-bore was WAY off target, so I can appreciate Randy's accomplishment.

My cold-bore shot was about 20 FEET diagonally high left off the target and then we walked it in. We had no trouble spotting most of the misses because they kicked up dust.

My friend Mark shot after me and he made 5 out of 6 on steel on his final sequence. Honest. In fairness, another shooter only got maybe 3 or 4 hits out of 25.

Note -- I'm pretty sure this was at 60X, but I may have dialed it back to take the photo with cell phone. In any case it's clear we could see fairly small details at 2025 yards, which is 1.15 miles.

NOTE: I am NOT challenging that the target was very hard to see at Camp Atterbury. I am only saying that, on a good day, in another location, I had NO problem seeing a 3'x3' target with a riflescope set at 25X, and I could even see the orange ring in the center. Big movements of the wind tape could be detected with the riflescope. I even called a number of Mark's impacts on the plate when I was spotting with the 60X spotting scope. Many of the hits I could NOT see for sure, but I called maybe half of his hits on steel which we later confirmed by driving down and inspecting. You would look for a puff of paint and then a formerly white area that became darker...

I've shot 2,000 yards as well. You can't see with the naked eye. However, you can see just fine with a good scope. Mirage is the big factor. The day we shot, we used 14X because of the mirage.

Nice shooting with cold bore shot!
