6BRA does it again NEW WORLD RECORD

Not to wander off to far topic or diminish in any way this great shooting. I was trying to find an older shooting event it was in Virginia or ?? around 2010. I recall "James Lorenz" ?? He had a 3-inch plus group and what made it important to me was that he used a 6.5 x 55 Swede with a Douglas Barrel. Is anyone familiar with this shooter or his accomplishment ? Kinda of a needle in a haystack I know. - thanks

I bet it was a 6.5x55 IMP and was probably Harry Jones Range. Their light gun is only 5 shots. Way harder shooting 10 shot groups and shooting small. JIM LORENZ is from western PA. Look him up on Facebook and he will probably answer you. He retired from shooting about two years ago. Matt

I will be happy to describe the rifle, as there are many text, calls and emails.

Shehane Laminate Tracker modified with 4 "front and 2" rear plates. Stock rear was milled to be parallel with front.
Bat VR single shot receiver rblpre with intergal pic rail and recoil lug. There are a number modifications to the receiver. Bolt was cut to cone and a center action screw added by my son Jamey's shop GCP. Bolt/receiver timing was by Alex Wheeler. Receiver 3 pillar is bedded in Devcon not glued by Al Weaver. Bix n Andy competition trigger.
Barrel is a Krieger 8 twist .237 @ 27.5" with a Harrel brake. Originally a Dasher chambered by son and now at 370+ rounds set back to BRA by Alex.
Like Matt said, a typical light gun.

Tim, the scope is March 10-60x52T with the 3/32 dot in NF 30 mm rings.
Group was shot at 34x.
This is what I always Always say. You dont need 50 to 60 power to shoot little groups. I would bet most BR records have been shoot under 40 power. Most times you can't use that much anyhow. I don't know what it was like when he shot because I was in the pits. I know when I shot, it was one of the rare times I shot on 42x and the sight picture was that good I could see the little stones washed out from the rain on the back bank. The last time i saw it that good was Sept. Of 2010. That is a very rare time there. Matt

Matt you forget one thing, your still young. Us older guys in there 70's see better with a little more light coming in the scope. I have noticed that for about five years now. I only set mine on 35 anymore. Old eyes see alike.

Your forgetting, I told you for years you didn't need that high power to shoot small. You always told me you needed to see the x to shoot small. I never saw an x on the target till I got a competition. I shot lots of little groups with 25 to 32. Matt

Matt,

It seems very often when we get good conditions and I zoom up and "aim small", a lot of times it doesn't pan out lol..... Kind of brings us back to the scope/poi discussion me thinks.

Tom
Me thinks, the high power magnifies everything bad. It definitely can make you chase things. Matt

Matt and Tom, two of my favorite mentors talking about chasing things. This brings me to something that happened on that record target. When a smiling Jerry Ware sought me out after pit duty and told me "you shot a 3"+ and shots 1&4 went left, I immediately knew I made a major error at least on shot 1. The last 3 on sighter were nice solid 10's. 30 yard flags looked great, 500 yard flags looked good but mirage at target was gone. When I slid rifle to stop, the dot was on right outside box. I cranked windage to center and touched off shot. Matt told me last year that the habit would burn me. Tom told me always rock the rifle in bags once to confirm sight picture. So I feel I held shot 1 at least 1" left. What a bummer. Coulda shoulda been a least a big 2". To many years of short range muscle memory. Hope this helps newbie 1000 yard competitors. Always listen to your mentors who have probably learned the hard way.
Roger

PS: Hope you all have a great holiday and be sure to remember all those fallen heroes and men and women who have served this great country.

In response to a number of PM's / questions on the three pillar bedding. The three screws are all torqued to 65 inch pounds.

I happy for that but when you see shots open the group up it could just be the wind doing it is all I said. Not taking any thing away from the record but I saw that happen a lot over the years. That is something you you can't control and if it held he may have been in the 2" range and knowing Roger he had all his ducks in a row...... I guess I don't paint a good picture..... Jim

Thank you sir. The BRA is just getting started. It has been almost a year since that score record and the cartridge continues setting more records and winning championships. I've received dozens of calls and PM's on the cartridge, loads and rifle etc. etc. and enjoyed every one of them. My personal belief is that LG 1000 yard record will be broken in 2018. I personally test at 480 yards and have seen combinations in excellent evening conditions that are in the .200-.300. Again it is mostly about a cartridge, barrels and bullet and a top smith. Always has, always will be. Reminds me of my PPC days but now long range.
