New Computer in JD's Holler

I always access the forum on my iPhone or iPad. I also have an old computer that hasn’t been turned on in years and a work laptop that I only use for work stuff.

I am on the older side and I do 90% of my internet stuff on a computer. Younger folks do 90% on their phones. I can't stand using a phone for my internet usage.

Had an Osbourne 1, about a year after they came out. They were the cat's meow, at the time. Darned near indestructible. But with that terribly, almost laughably small screen. Paperwhite and beautifully clear text, but still.

To think that nearly everybody on the planet who does a phone almost coos in amazement at how wonderful surfing the internet is with the things ... with a screen not all that different in size than that 40+ year old Osbourne. Go figure.

At least the modern handheld computers (phones) are under a half pound. Those darned Osbournes (aka "Samsonites") were north of 30 pounds once you added a modem and extra floppy disk drive. 1200bps and you could be the talk o' the neighborhood. Woo-hoooo!

I'm 68, but use a HP 15" laptop daily, larger or "normal" keyboard is mo better for me, keeps a few of the bad words aways but not all. I have no desire to look/read forum threads on a smart phone. I have a smart phone cause the wife says I need one, but that's another argument for another day. It does make for a great food timer when I'm grilling a steak tho. LOL
I may have to start using as a timer, good idea!

In one respect, computers are a great way to research things you need to know about. But, in an even greater respect, they are poison - a tool used to shape the public's opinion on important items, a way to publish propaganda, manipulate our thought process. Smart phone replaces our memory causing it to be dulled. We can't do simple math problems because we are used to having a calculator at our finger tips. An electronic calendar means we don't have to remember important dates, it does that for us. There is research showing that children who spend lots of time in front of a screen develop behavior problems, and the incidences of teen suicide has been climbing. Computers give voice to idiots I don't even know and who spew their ignorance out for the world to gobble up. Like that mentally disturbed man bud lite chose to represent their product.

I personally know, for a fact, that if I avoid the news completely I physically feel better. This occurrence has been noticed by others I have talked to.

No sush think as a smart phone

I use an old Dell with XP 7 PRO. Big monitor allows for having multiple windows open at the same time (and being able to read them). I just picked up a phone (kid's bought it for me), I don't use it much except for traveling/hunting to pass the time.

Most of the time I use my galaxy S10+ on this site, I have no problems at all. In fact this forum is probably one of the best when it comes to mobile layout.

Keep a laptop around, mainly to run a printer and online classes. My brother, IT employee, rebuilds them. Every 5 years or so he asks if I want a "new" one, current one has developed a cursor issue. Brother said to bring it next time, he has a replacement for me. I read this site and others on my Kindle, phone for pic work. Kindle is 7 years old, may need to upgrade it.

I've been using the mac for long enough that I didn't want to re-learn a PC. I'm also a I-phone guy so I guess they go together well. (the cloud and such)

My Dad finished his gig on this earth about a year and a half ago, and the last few years his computer/phone skills were -- gone. Many times I sat with him and tried to clean up the mess on his PC, or teach him how to use his latest Android. I'm may still be scarred from it. jd

Ditto, my laptop is pretty much dead and sits in the closet, I phone is my only connection with the outside world.
That’s how I like it. I’m not on any social media platforms and this is the only forum I’m a member of.

I've replaced batteries on several Macbook Pros. Unless there's something special or unusual about the unit you had, it should take about $50-$60 and one half hour of your time. I didn't view it as a big deal at all. However, simply renewing the battery will not upgrade the OS, or make the machine as fast as a newer model. So after ten years, I'm thinking you made a good choice going the upgrade route. IMO - the problem with using a phone for anything related to surfing the internet is its small size. For those with vision issues, it can be very difficult to see the small phone screen. I also find it much easier to type using a computer keyboard, rather than a phone. Typing with a phone is just not a skill I ever developed to any useful degree.

So my old MacBook Pro was a cast-off that my wife gave me. It's ten years old, and the battery is finally toast. I made a few calls, and found that to have the battery replaced would be not only expensive, but - well, stupid. Soooo, I let them sell me a '2019' MacBook Air, which is very close to the same function and features that my old one had.

This new computer seems to have the same problems that the other one had, making me sound even dumber than I actually am. I'm also sorry to find that my typing skills suck as badly with this one as they did with the last. I'd like to ask up front that I not be held responsible for many of the things that might spew forth from this thing.

This whole deal got me to wondering just how many of our members here use only a phone to access the forum, and -- I guess everything else in the cyber world. It seems that many people no longer use or even own a computer these days. I've also got a new I-Phone recently, and am pretty proficient with it, but it just doesn't seem handy for here on the forum. And yeah, I'm almost old. jd
well JD —-Ive got an iphone, ipad and windows 7 desk top. i would not want to be without any of them. I pad is a much better viewing experience than an iphone to me. i use it most of the time im on a computer at home. I would not want to have only phone access online. Ive decided to stop using apple products except for the iphone. As soon as this ipad dies the iphone will be it but i will get something to replace it. (ipad) I think some android tablet or small windows laptop but ill have something. this ipad is like the energizer bunny though. It just keeps on truckin. It may never croak. Sometimes if i want to list something for sale in classifieds here i will create the thread on my ipad or desktop at my house and go to my shop(3/4 mile) take a few pics of item with iphone then logon here on iphone and edit the thread i created to load the pics i just took to the thread created before. Thats Handy to be able to do. i dont like typing on the phone

since I am only 1 of the 3 remaining people in Ventura that are still using a flip phone, (and one that has texts blocked at that) I would be lost without an actual computer... I am not a complete Luddite, I think I spend too much time on line as it is.

You’re right on about the wackos pushing their wacky ideas! There’s this “extremist group” I was reading about that says I need to weigh my primers!
