New Computer in JD's Holler

So my old MacBook Pro was a cast-off that my wife gave me. It's ten years old, and the battery is finally toast. I made a few calls, and found that to have the battery replaced would be not only expensive, but - well, stupid. Soooo, I let them sell me a '2019' MacBook Air, which is very close to the same function and features that my old one had.

This new computer seems to have the same problems that the other one had, making me sound even dumber than I actually am. I'm also sorry to find that my typing skills suck as badly with this one as they did with the last. I'd like to ask up front that I not be held responsible for many of the things that might spew forth from this thing.

This whole deal got me to wondering just how many of our members here use only a phone to access the forum, and -- I guess everything else in the cyber world. It seems that many people no longer use or even own a computer these days. I've also got a new I-Phone recently, and am pretty proficient with it, but it just doesn't seem handy for here on the forum. And yeah, I'm almost old. jd

This response is typed on an 8-year-old iPad.

We do have a significant amount of visitors viewing the Forum via smartphones, but I strongly recommend using a tablet or desktop if available.

Reading, scrolling, searching and image attaching will all be much easier with the larger format.

Certain sites (forums, Amazon, delivery status email) I use the phone for.
But when it's a lengthy reply, then MAC Book is the man.

I do use the laptop occasionally but the I phone can’t be beat for me. It’s so quick with taking care of spelling and punctuation, just need to proofread before posting. Attaching pictures when needed is unbelievably easy. The only benefit of the computer is the larger screen for viewing pictures. YMMV

Got a moderate case of old-fart-itis myself. You're in good company.

I'm a "desktop" person. Never did take a shine to the non-mouse mouse methods of laptops. Modern cell phones are an amazing collection of all useful tools known to consumerism ... yet I find them lacking when it comes to a "good old desktop's" abilities for basic services over the internet (websites, forums, etc). Couldn't say whether "old-fart-itis" covers all of it. Some of my friends pronounce it differently, bless their hearts.

I don’t own a computer other than my work computer. I do 100% of my forum work on my phone.

A few years back my wife bought a new desk top computer and Its an all-in-one dell. I was assembling an AR lower and I usually have the assembly instructions playing in the background while I am working. As I was installing the detent and spring for the front takedown pin, It got away from me and impacted the screen so hard it killed my computer. Daughter sees the hole in the screen and declare that's the problem. I am at my wits end, when the wife says we knew this could happen that's why we got the extended warranty!

I access this site through my Samsung smartphone, for reasons of convenience only.
I'm only 42, but I act a lot older. Just got the smartphone a year ago after I rototilled my trusty flippy phone.

I use an old windows 7 computer since the hard drive died in my win 10 computer. Lost all my gun files and pics. . Some times I'll check the forum on my phone while watching TV but posting is always done on the desk top comp. It's the only way I can do pics.

Ditto, my laptop is pretty much dead and sits in the closet, I phone is my only connection with the outside world.

Phone. Only thing I use a computer for is when I do taxes once a year or print targets from this site. I have to use a computer like once a month to keep my work account valid but it's all on my phone too. I use a Chromebook laptop to do fire department reports to the state.

I am on the older side and I do 90% of my internet stuff on a computer. Younger folks do 90% on their phones. I can't stand using a phone for my internet usage.

I'm 68, but use a HP 15" laptop daily, larger or "normal" keyboard is mo better for me, keeps a few of the bad words aways but not all. I have no desire to look/read forum threads on a smart phone. I have a smart phone cause the wife says I need one, but that's another argument for another day. It does make for a great food timer when I'm grilling a steak tho. LOL
