new barrel for rem 700 / 223

I am wanting to replace the "worn" factory barrel on my Rem 700 in 223. Prairie Dog Hunting rifle..
I've read some about the "Remage" replacements.
I've been using Shilen replacements on my Savages with good success..
Thoughts? Suggestions?

the remage is more of a do it yourself type of thing if that is what you are looking for....IMO, for hunting purposes it should be great/

I have converted a few and they turned out great, actually I was one of the first to do a Remage that I knew of at the time.
My smith refused to do the conversion so I had to do it myself, best thing he ever did I have not been back since.
Here is one of mine it was a 300Rum Sendero and now it is a 338 Edge with a 32" Barrel, actually I have 3 barrels for this setup a 358Rum and a 375Rum all 32" barrels that I swap back and forth. It takes 10 min to do the swap ready to fire head space and all, I have even done it at the range just to see if I could. It is more than a hunting Rig I can hang with the 1000 yard crowd and be competitive, my favorate varmint load is 160gr Barnes TTSX's with 105gr RL17 for 4200fps+ I acually shot that load at 1000 yards for poops and giggles there was less than 15 moa of drop.LOL

I also have a few on the smaller end as far as case capacity, my VSSF 22-250 has 4 Barrels 8,10,12 and 14 twist barrels that are all Ackley Improved, all work well and are extremely accurate. when I remove the factory shouldered barrel from a Remington action, what I end up doing is setting it back or "Rethroating" it, I always knock the shoulder off the barrel and put a barrel nut on it when other shooters see the Remington stamping on the barrel with a barrel nut they always leave scratching there heads.LOL

In 2009 I had my Rem Model 700 222 rebarreled to 223 Rem. The smith install a 26", Douglas Match barrel, 12" twist, Number 5 contour. With 55 Noslers, H4895, and Federal 205M primers this rifles shoots sub 1/4 moa. I've taken a bunch of ghogs with it and I totally pleased. I had the smith flute the barrel to reduce the weight but it's still a heavy rifle. I also restocked it with a Bell and Carlson Medalist stock.

How would one "pin the lug" and "no nut?"

PIN IS DRILLED THOURGH LUG INTO THE ACTION FACE AND THAT KEEPS THE LUG SQUARE TOO THE ACTION SCREW NEW BARREL ON AFTER ITS HEADSPACE AND CHAMBERED AND THREADS CUT SCREW IT ON AND TORGUE IT TO 85 FLBS AND SHOOT SOME OF MY ACTION HAS 4 BARRELS ALSO

I just shot a 588-16X in my first ever F-class match (223) with a beat down R700/Criterion Remage barrel (223 Remington Match-throated for 80s). I picked up the barrel, action wrench, and lug from NSS. I don't have a ton of experience with non-factory bolt gun barrels to compare, but this cleans up much easier than the factory barrel I pulled off.

With the cost and wait times for smiths, I chose to go the Remage route as an experiment. I'm pretty happy with it. Now if I can just get higher magnification optics I might be able to actually make corrections during the match.

I've watched some videos on the Remage replacement. It appears all I need to do is unscrew the "old" barrel and then use "go" and "no go" gauges to set the barrel for head space. And that's it? I wouldn't need to use a reamer would I?

No you do not need a reamer, it is the same procedure as swapping a Savage barrel.

To add to that if you are so inclined, you can use a Savage Recoil Lug that has the pin in it which makes centering it a breeze, "They are the same size" all you have to do is make a little notch in they action with a Dremel. It is really easy all you have to do is use they action bolt holes as a reference point to guide you and center it.

Ok, I've never really paid attention to the "Remage" barrel reference when I saw it in a forum thread but now that I see it, I'm intrigued. I've been tossing around the idea of either re-barreling an older M700 BDL Varmint Special that I have or just selling it to purchase another rifle in a different caliber. I've bought a few Savage actions and barrels from NSS and built some low budget (but accurate) hunting rigs because I can't afford a custom. For the price of having a gunsmith re-barreling my rifle, I could just about buy a good factory rifle that would suit my needs.

My question is, if I were to switch to the Remage set-up, would I have to modify my BDL stock in order to accommodate the barrel nut?

No you would not have to modify the stock since the barrel nut on a Remage, is basically the same diameter as the shoulder is on a factory 700, just look at the pic it's the same dia as the recoil lug or so little it is not worth worrying about any trimming can be done with a drill and a $5.00 flapper wheel.

Like most here, I have a few 700s that have been rebarreled by a good smith. Almost all aftermarket barrels are way better that factory barrels. I have Shillen, Douglas, Hart, Kreiger, etc. and they all shoot way better than stock. Easier to clean too. Bed it and tune the trigger and you will love it again, maybe more!
