New Action ~1K Budget

you also going to post about your friend wanting to choose a trigger, a barrel, and a stock? (Barrel is critical, more so than the action IMO.)

No. He already has a stock, trigger, scope and rings covered. Plus, I have sufficient experience to guide those choices.

What I was missing was experience with these particular actions. I can read marketing stuff as well as everyone else, but that doesn’t tell you about whether there are inherent issues with the products, like things not being square enough.

I’m fine with researching taking my time, I may follow his path when funds allow. Besides, I get to learn things along the way.

Since bolt handles seem to be involved and I am not familiar with some of the actions in question I went and looked up ones mentioned in this discussion Who ever designed the Nucleus and/or the Atlas gets a Blue Ribbon for the word ugly. Beyond me to pick between those two. However, I have 3 Pandas and must say the attention and customer service I have received at Kelblys is the finest. I could live with the ugly bolt knob (I think) to get the customer service.

I thought exactly the same thing on the bolt stop and big door knob of a bolt handle. I guess the bolt stop would be great if you're going to be cycling the bolt fast and firm in a match but for a hunting rifle I want to be able to get the bolt out if needed without any tools. Kelby's makes a regular style side bolt release for them and I ended up getting one from them.
I tried to get one but they don’t make the spring hinge style stop for the Lapua size action. Guess I’m stuck.

Is it common for the Kelby to have timing issues or is it your combination with a B&A trigger?
I haven’t tried a jewel on the Atlas. I like the BnA TacSport Pro trigger so much on hunting and varmint rifles that I’ve stopped buying jewell. Nothing against Jewell because I love the ones I still have on rifles and they’ve never given me grief, I just like the TS Pro more. I even have a spare TS Pro sitting on the bench for whatever my next build might be.

The bolt handle that comes on the Atlas is the ugliest thing I’ve ever seen and was the first thing I changed out.
Atlas is available with a variety of bolt handles. The Atlas I have coming has the standard Panda/Kodiak round knob.

Good shootin'. -Al

With the floating bolt head on some of those tactical actions, they will never be as smooth
as a true BR action.
He mentioned that he wouldn't be in any big competitions, so timing them
wouldn't be a big consideration.
As long as it goes bang when you pull the trigger.

I'm not sure where you heard that from because I purchased one from Kelby's for my 300 Norma Imp. I'm not sure who I talked with on the phone there, but when I called them they said no problem and sent me one right out.

Defiance Tenacity would be my pick. Price is right. Build like a tank. They don’t have the ugly handle everyone is talking about. Bugholes always has them in stock, except for a long action with a standard bolt face.
Good luck with your build.

Thanks for all of the feedback. Just because I haven't directly addressed a comment doesn't mean I'm not going to chew on it. It's all appreciated.

On a mag fed repeater, I would be more concerned with pin fall than a little cock on close or de-cock on close. In fact, many deliberately set them up to have cock on close (easier to open). Actions with trigger hangers make it easier to deal with slightly insufficient pin fall. I’ve heard that you can call Kelbly’s and they’ll send you another hanger if the initial set-up is insufficient. I can’t speak first hand, but it seems legit.
