New 277 Fury

You would think..in this day and age that with the next advancement our military would be using some handheld squad weapon that is not based on 100+ year old technology.
We are still trying to kill the enemy by shooting little pieces of copper coated lead at them like we did at the turn of the century.
Jeez. What happened to laser guns?!

We just need to scale these down and fit them inside the SR-72 and shoot down the Russian and Chinese satellites, would that make you happy.... lol

I suppose you are looking for a backpack power supply and cooling system, or embedded in a pistol ala Buck Rogers. You have to ask DARPA. Or do your own research, tap on this money.

Actually, the special electronics specialty (lasers and optics) was heavily recruiting within the services in mid 1970s.

"From 1975 to 1984, the US used an NKC-135 for its Airborne Laser Lab program. The modified NKC-135A carried 10.6 micrometer Carbon Dioxide Laser. Tests included successful interceptions of small air to air missiles (such as the AIM 9 Sidewinder) and of drone aircraft. Despite the combat potential of the system, it was kept strictly experimental. However, the SCUD threat faced during the Gulf War reignited interest in an airborne laser system, resulting in the Boeing YAL-1."

I had heard nothing about this at all until I saw the aircraft years ago at the National Museum of the USAF at Wright-Patterson AFB, displayed unceremoniously, and I read the display placard.

It doesnt have to be a laser! Noone one knew what lasers were years ago. So I would expect our military to devise some other soldier equipped surprise weapon which will make the powder and projectile obsolete on battlefield. It will probably evolve into being some micro flying bot with artificial intelligence that explodes on contact. Times 50.

Bullets and ordinance are not light, and because we need to carry and burn powder, the brass we use to hold the powder is also heavy.

Lasers are similar if you think about them like if the laser itself is the bullet, and the energy source is the powder. Right now neither one is very light.

Keep in mind that with small arms, some politicians are in favor of spending the money cause they actually care about the burden of the grunts, and other politicians are only in favor cause they envision a world where the tech is exclusive to the military. Be careful what you wish for.....

60 minutes, show on concussion. Great guy, former high level, very accomplished (Seal?) military guy, son killed himself, Navy Seal. the father was very sharp. Knew how to do stuff in DC. Had his son brain looked at. Military looking at it. FN, blast, 308, very piss poor hearing protection last 20 years in mid east. here we are again getting ready to do it on steroids w 277. It aint F rocket science. You can't cheat Papa Physics. He gets his due. same as M1 Abrams rounds inside tank. I don't know what the solution is. And I am a pro military MF, hoping our Armed Services are ready for the next big conflagration when it happens.
