Need Advice on Finishing my Wood Stock

So I need to add more bedding material to the holes? Then sand til it matches?

Guess I'll have to paint it brown so it doesn't stick

@Bc'z ...you must really hate Tikka tangs too. that's what this action is.
Mind numbing punch me in the face tedium!! But it can be done.20230914_162422.jpg

well, I couldn't leave it alone. The fore end was too long IMO and made the barrel look too stubby so I sawed off about an inch and this made an appearance.

Is this the dowel they use to hold the rosewood tip and spacer on with? and the yellow is the glue?
Do i just keep sanding away hoping to get it to something other than yellow?

It might go all the way through spacer??

Well. Another update. Made a plug, not a very good one, was slightly smaller than the hole I made. Glued in and cut it off and sanded the front again. I'm sure it'll stick out like a turd in a punchbowl once finished but chalk it up to learning experience.

I do like it better with the tip cut back and sanded it a bunch to narrow it down.

Any tips to better hide the plug, I'm all ears.

What a pity that grain didn't line up... You could always do some sort of inlay that covered the entire area i.e. make it a feature somehow. Resin infill, silver/gold engraving escutcheon etc.

Yeah, I tried lining up the grain.

Any examples of an inlay or what I could use?

you could have taken a lot of sanded wood dust from the part you cut off and mixed it into a paste with the clear glue/epoxy you used (I really have no clue if that would work)

Hmmmm know a good pinstriper?

What about staining the end black or another color to hide it some?
You could dye it a bit, start by doing just the nose , sand, blend more dye a lil farther, sand and do it again but don't sand it and don'tget intothe lighter wood. The glue line will probably still show making a perfect outline for a smiley face.
Seriously, I looked at the closeup it looks as good as you could ask for.
Think about what you've learned on this project and apply it to the next one.
Looking forward to watching your progress all the way to the target.

Inlays could be anything you want. Shotguns often have a polished brass inlay underneath the stock where one would have initials or family crest etc. If you Google gun escutcheons you’ll get some ideas. But working with metal in wood may be difficult. The simplest thing would be to do a fill in an epoxy resin in a colour that you’d be happy to be visible. Matching the grain to hide it is extremely difficult, so make it prominent. For example, a deep ruby red, amber gold or dark brown. Something that would look nice set against that wood when finished.

What dye would you use and color? For sure, I'd only do the tip and not the whole stock. I was thinking of a black since you see black fore end tips and grip caps. I was bummed the plug was that much smaller than the hole, probably the cheap plug cutter I used, I read that the plugs should be a force fit and barely need any glue but not in my case. I stuffed the edges with shavings of the wood to try and cover the glue but obviously didn't get it all. I am learning a lot on this venture for sure. Really glad my first bedding job is done and turned out pretty well.

If the plug was more centered, an inlay or a smiley face would look way better. Unless i make the inlay bigger to center it and cover the plug.

Brown, copper and vintage amber. And after looking at the stock I'd probably just do the whole thing. Sand between 1st 2 colors but not the vintage amber.

Yes the inlay or infill of resin would be bigger to cover the full problem area and appropriately centered/positioned.

Personally I’d be aiming to preserve the wood in its glory rather than staining it black (or whatever). You have a small problem that requires addressing. No need to black out the whole tip. Regardless of colour, unless you literally paint it so you can’t see the wood grain you’ll still see the grain mismatch there.

You know my views as to how to finish the wood… No Tru-Oil*, no spraying. But how you finish your work is entirely up to you.

* Tru-Oil is a polyurethane (ie plastic) varnish heavily thinned with mineral spirits in a very small amount of linseed and other oils. It’s a quick ‘n dirty solution and not what I’d call a ‘proper’ stock finish.
