3. Buff it all off until absolutely clean. (A lint free rag and a very small amount of BLO, then finish with the heel of the palm)
4. Set aside to 'dry'
5. Repeat.
If you want to speed filling the grain you can add an additional filler like rottenstone or baby powder between steps 2 and 3 (or to make a slurry as you do 1.)
FWIW it sounds like it's a (non-traditional) 'slacum' - we just don't know the exact ingredients. It's likely very 'heavy' meaning the filler and varnish elements are large versus the drying oil base. Heavier mixes are easier/faster to use (fill faster) but have constraints re end finish. So trade-offs there.
