Need a heavy tactical barrel

I have heard of a few good barrel companies out there, Krieger, Walthar, Robar, HS, GAP, the list goes on and on. The bad thing is all of them will tell you over the phone or emails why they all have better barrel's than the next company. Well action is better than words in my book. Anyone have input on which company makes the best barrel. On the civilian side, I have seen what Krieger barrel's are capible of when thy are put together by tactical operations incorporated shooting 1.5moa @ 500. Nothing against tacops but of course they will take all the crdit for it. Need a good barrel and a tight action to go with it. If someone can give me a link or phone number i'd appreciate it.

There's no right answer to your question. If there was, there would only be one barrel company in business.

6 or 7 companies make fine barrels. But they all make a few turds once in awhile.... after all, humans are making them.

Plenty of good actions around too. Stiller, Hall, Stolle, BAT etc.

The gunsmith you choose is even more important than the components you select.

You can spend 3 grand or so and get a great rifle IF you use the right smith. You can also spend that money and end up with a rig that shoots no better than a re-barreled Remington if your smith is a goober.

By any chance have any of you heard of a guy namde Dave Ewer? He's a gun smith with excellent abilities, and not it's not me hence my name is Dave as well.

Headseeker,
How did you hear of tacops? What have you heard of tacops? If you would prefer send me a pm. I've seen some articles written is swat mag about tacops. Just wondering what people are saying.

Rummor has it they are making tactical rifle masterpieces that shoot like benchresters. I have seen picture's myself of this, but am not 100$ sure if they are legit or not. But to give you an example, a guy posted a picture of a target he shot 1.43 @ 500 yds. It could just be Tacops is making these masterpiece's I don't know for sure cause I have not witnessed it myself.
I know some benchwarmers would be happy to shoot that with their benchrest rifle's. If you do the math, your looking at better than .25moa. A lot of people are posting their pictures on lone after shooting their new tacops rifle's and saying you can't say this is a .25moa shooting gun because it's only making one hole. If this is true, I don't give them all the credit, I give most of it to Krieger barrels. If you are interested in tacops here is the link.

HS -- see my other post in your other thread...

It DOES happen...but please don't expect it unless you want to be dissappointed. Hype, and fancily worded "guarentees" are not worth much in reality.

O, and to answer your question...the barrels im running at this point are limited to Broughton, www.rifle-barrels.com ) and Krieger, http://www.kriegerbarrels.com/ )

But I would like to try: Kostyshyn, Lawton and Spencer at some point...

Headseaker:

You asked a subjective question. Opinions are like bung holes everyone has one.

If your look at the barrel makers logicaly Kreiger, would probably win, just looking at the number of match winners. No doubt John Kreiger makes a fine barrel, he is a gentleman to deal with too. Tim North at Broughton makes a fine barrel also. He is the new kid on the block. Tim also is a great guy to do business with. Dan Lija,Doug Shilen,Boots Obermyer, Mark Chanlynn, Gary Schneider, and Hart all make top quality barrels. There are a number of other little guys who also make great barrels. I would say the time and skill of your gunsmith is more important than the action or barrel.

Headseeker,
I have known of tac ops for quite a few years now. I used to work at the range where he tests his rifles. I've seen some great groups out of his rifles. In regards to the barrels Mike owner of tac ops. Swears by Krieger. The reason i asked how you heards of him is. I'm wondering what others think of the rifles he puts out.

Have a few Kriegers that have done and are doing very well. Also have a beat-up old Hart that shoots better than it has any right to at this stage. Picked up an Obermeyer not long ago,Thanks Monte!) that I'm looking forward to using. Haven't been able to tell any real difference in accuracy from any of them, they all shoot better than I can hold! Custom barrels are great, but I'll be darned if I can tell you for sure that one is better than another.

Regards, Guy

If you want a cut rifled then Krieger is probably the #1 choice.

Right now in LR guns for Button rifled, go with the Broughton 5C twist. It will also run about 50-75 fps faster by most shooters.

I shoot Kriegers and Broughtons in my comp guns.

As for a smith, GAP, and any of the top recommended smiths on this board are top smiths and most are comptetitive shooters.

Jerry Stillers Predator action for $695 is going to be hard to beat and lot of tactical guys like the Surgeon actions. GAP is building a tactical M7000 they call it.

As for a .25 MOA gun, that requires two things that many shooters do not have IF they have a gun that is capable. ie enough experience loading and enough trigger time to hold and steer it .25 MOA

Good luck

My factory RP 300 RSAUM Sendero has almost done that but from 500m. The group measures 1.44". The only problem is I have not gotten that group again. The same goes with every gun. The groups seem to hover around 2.2-2.8" day in day out. I do not always get the wind right to put all the bullets in the bullseye yet, but they do group very well. Just trying to make the same point as others that one group means nothing really.

I have three witnesses to the group, but you can dispell that I guess because they are my brothers and father.

You should be addressing this type of question to the Forum at Sniper's Hide as they are much more experienced with tactical type weapons and builders of such weapons. The web address is: www.snipershide.com .

If you are really serious about a custom "Tactical" rifle, contact Terry Cross, Long Range Solutions. He has built two tac rifles for me and his work is superior. He does not have a website as he is too busy making guns and training serious tac people. His email address is: "Terry Cross" <KMW308@aol.com

He will send you a CD with his catalogue on it.

Good shooting,
George
