neck or full length sizing ?

Guy's I shoot with shoot better then me , it's good for me 1/2" at 200 yards some shoot one ragged hole , granted maybe 5 shot groups but the more rounds you shoot at the target most likely it will open up . I shoot at 3 square 1" boxes 10 shots each , 30 rounds in 90 minutes and I'm done . No rail guns just a babied Rem 700 with almost 4000 through the barrel by the end of the season.

Thanks guy's for clearing that up , I measured groups from outer edge to outer edge , thanks , it makes my groups smaller . I shoot 308 , once at 100 yards I shot a 3 shot group one hole dead center , I looked at it as a .308 group . Didn't shoot the forth knew I'd screw it up , kept the target . I normally shoot 3 ten shot groups at 200 yards average 1/2" edge to edge .

The easy way to measure CTC groups is to close your digital calipers on the bullet, in your case .308, and then zero out the calipers. Then when you measure the groups using the outer edges, you'll be recording the CTC dimension. Easy peasy. I alway translate my measurements to MOA to keep things in proper prospective.

Thanks Texas
I'm not into competition shooting , most of the time I eyeball my groups , I only concentrate on shooting form . When a round goes south I know it's something I did , you know the instant it goes off . Been using the same load for two years now . I give my barrel a complete cleaning after every range trip .

Like you, I shoot just for fun and didn't pay a lot of attention to group size. Then I started measuring group size and logging the results. Then it was finding the groups center and distance and angle from POA. Then trends and before I knew it, I was head first down the rabbit hole.

Been there , my pet load that I've been shooting is 40.8 grains of IMR 4064 with a .002 jump with .001 to .002 case headspace no more or less . It's giving me a consistent 1/2" groups at 200 yards . Been shooting this rifle for 10+ years and for the last two years I've been shooting the round I listed without any tweaking . I enjoy shooting much more until another barrel change and it starts all over again . My loads are below listed but things change when your shooting match barrels , there much tighter then stock . Try starting lowand see how it goes . I used a Go Gauge with shims to find my chamber length using a stripped bolt , once I knew my chamber length I used a sized case using my stripped bolt to find my bolt face to ogive measurement . Worked well for me .? What are you getting for headspace and ogive settings. I moved away from zero headspace and jamming my rounds , a slight wiggle room work worked best for my rifle on this barrel .

I dont' want to hijack Rebs thread so I'll keep it short. The 168SMKs I loaded with 40.3 Varget. I'm annealing after every loading, and setting the shoulder back .002. I found the 168 SMK shot best at +.005 and that's where I'll start load development with the TMK, then work my way back in .005 steps. I'll do a charge development first, then seat depth.

I don't think so 10 shot groups pretty well chew's up the target to a 1/2" hole , I shoot at my home made targets , 3 on a page horizontally equally spaced 1" outlined box 1/4" out lined in black , leaves a 1/2 white center . My scope is at 24 power and the target is visually perfect for me. A circle bull I didn't care for , I have my scope set where I keep the horizontal crosshair on the bottom line on the target . As the temperature cools I'll adjust my hold to center and top line . Hardly ever have to make scope adjustments , always shooting 200 yards same load for 2 years now I don't change a thing . Like shooting much more now without tweaking things .
I was thinking you are shooting a 308 instead of a 223. Still, that’s around .14 for ten shots.

Good morning:
Is this full sizing or neck sizing? I had my .308WIN dies set up to bump shoulder back .0015"-.002" and in changing sizing lube, I did not realized that the shoulder stayed at the same length? The neck was reduce. Of course, I adjusted to bump back shoulder but was curios as to nomenclatures? As a beginner, I only drink full sizing mantra. I am using a full size Forster hone die.

I also only full size to your same case headspace measurements . Does the Forster hone die bottom at the Shell holder . Do you neck turn your brass . Your case headspace is perfect for bolt action accuracy. Hone die and .0015 -.002 doesn't seem like a beginner , if so your way ahead of the game. How did you find your chamber length?

Your making me a better shooter then I am . My groups are good , not that good , maybe it's the paper I'm using for my targets . I am going to tape the back of the target to hold it together . I would like to be able to post a picture of the targets . I played with all different shapes , colors and sizes until I found the perfect target . 3 one inch 1/4" outlined in black squars , gives me a 1/2" white center , very comfortable with scope on 24 power , no stress on the eyes .

Please post a pic of the target if you can . I am interested to see it,my old eyes can use some help . Sounds perfect for me,my eyes get fatigued quickly with some targets/scopes.

I can explain it easier , I take a 8 1/2 x 11 piece of paper , across the 11 side I space equally 3 one inch boxes with a 1/4" black outline or boarder , using a black magic marker around each box , this leaves a white 1/2" center . Looking through my scope on 24 power at 200 yards just right , not to big or small. Give it a try , I'm giving out my secrets . Hope it Helps .

Thanks for the explanation,I will give it a try. I was over-thinking it as I often do. Your secret is safe with me.

cw308 "Does the Forster hone die bottom at the Shell holder ." Yes but I was able to go in between 1/16 and 1/8 turn of the die to get the shoulder bump.

"How did you find the chamber length? Hornady Lock-N-Load O.A.L. gauge, afraid to do the wheeler methods as not very mechanical.

"doesn't seem like a beginner " read enough in this Forum and you get to follow "best" practices" and another reason why I happily subscribe! I feel so lucky that so many in this Forum are willing to help out. And thank you for your kind words.

The wheeler method is the method most precision shooters have used for many decades. It works every time and is repeatable to the .001 unlike the oal gage which requires special parts and isnt very repeatable anyway. Give it a try and youll get the hang of it. Make sure everything is clean and carbon free

Neck sizing works brass less, but after a few firings you need to FL size it . From a precision standpoint, this equates to firing cases of different dimensions every time which probably isn't a great thing. To keep everything consistent, I FL size cases each loading so I get the same case expansion in the chamber every time, vs having a case grow and be different size each loading.

do you have a link to the wheeler method ?
