How many had your service number that started with US?
I’m not sure young people of today understand what many of us faced out of High School.

I tell people that when I came out of HS in 1967 you had two choices in life, you could either enlist or get drafted. No ifs ands or buts, that was it. Unless you were a rich kid and went to college.

My Dad's A-180 xx 157 Being from a military family, I tried to join in 1961 but they wouldn't take married guys, in 1962 and 1963 they told me no because I had one child and another on the way.

My service number started out as US then was changed to RA.

Graduated from High School in May 1966 at 17. Turned 18 in the summer and between Thanksgiving and Christmas I went in and volunteered for the draft. I was 20 when I got out, couldn't even buy a beer when I got home. That was a long time ago and I try to never think about it. Sure got me off the farm

That is difficult to explain to people when I tell them that I ETS’ed out an E5 SGT under two, was the head of our company communications, had a top secret communications clearance, handled all encrypted traffic, and and could not walk into a bar and buy a beer the day I got home in Houston Tx.
I had yet to turn 21.

Jim, my Dad's in WW11 was not his SS number. I thought it was for many years but learned that it was not.

The Marine Corps the change to SS #'s in early 1972. I got out in Dec 71 and my red ID card had both my SS number and my service number. Other branches changed over to SS numbers at various times.
They have now gotten away from SS numbers due to identity theft. I think they are given DOD numbers now.

Mine started with ER, joined in 1965 while in college. Stayed in until 1971 and we still used the ER number. Now 2 of my daughters wear my dog tags on veterans day, makes me a proud dad.

I went into the navy right out of high school in 1963 at the age of 17 and was given a 7 digit all number ID. Latter on I would see newer sailors with a ID starting with the letter A and even latter on starting with the letter B. After 4 years I got out, went to college then back into the Navy to be a pilot and at that time my SS# became my service number but some of my naval records had paper work with both sets of service numbers as does some of my VA paperwork.
