My Uncle Fred

This was my Uncle Fred. He was piloting an LST that went down off Omaha beach 74 years ago and his remains were never found. I never met him, heard his voice or shook his hand. Please remember Fred and all like him who paid the ultimate sacrifice on June 6th, 1944. There are not adequate words to describe what we owe these guys.

Bugs,

I will remember your uncle in my prayers tomorrow.

In gratitude,

He will always be that age and be remembered as he looked then. As long as they are thought of they are never gone merely not with us until we pause and think of them.

"They shall grow not old, as we that are left grow old:
Age shall not weary them, nor the years condemn.
At the going down of the sun and in the morning
We will remember them."

We tend to think of them as the greatest fighting force assembled but we forget it was Fred from Fredericksburg, Pete from St. Petersburg, John from Johnstown, Joe from St. Joseph, Tom from Thomasville and so on. I had three uncles that were there that day. They all came back but left a lot of themselves behind. They have all since passed away and took their stories with them.

My father told me once, "the problem with a war is that it's all the good people who get killed"......Very sorry to hear about your uncle. My dad survived WWII.

There is a reason why countries do not have open borders. For our nation’s security. I am grateful to Fred and to many others just like him, for their sacrifice. I/we owe a lot to them.

My father-in-law was piloting a landing craft that day at Omaha beach. He is gone now also. Thanks to them all. "Memory is the only friend that grief can all it's own."
