My Story & Building My First Reloading Room

A little about me!

I am in the process of building my very own Reloading/gun Room. I'm 39 yrs old and I have been exposed and involved in reloading/shooting most of my life, but that was just as a bystander of sorts. My father is 77 yrs young and started reloading when he was in his late 30's. Growing up I have been a helper of sorts for many given task in the reloading room. Now being younger back then, I never took the reins so to speak, was always comfortable just listening to all his reloading talk. Which at the time wasn't a top priority, but other than deer hunting, this is where me and Dad connected. Over the years I become more and more interested in what he was trying to teach me and regret I have taken so long to dive in myself. There is never a visit or even a phone call I have made over the years since I left home almost 20yrs ago that we don't get knee deep talking about reloading, group sizes, guns and deer hunting. And it's not like I live far away, so I am there atleast once a week usually more.

Things for me started changing a few years ago when I started toying with the idea of shooting local benchrest. I become increasingly interested in having my own place like my dad. Now, dads set-up is awesome so I have been spoiled so to speak in terms of what I dream of doing at my place. My dads reloading room is inside his house and he has an adjoining room that has his shooting bench. He has almost a 300 yd range for shooting. It's taken me a few years but I am finally getting my ducks in a row.
My reloading room is located in a seperate building from my house, I have enclosed the double carport that was here and made it into my Mega Man Cave so to speak. This building consist of 3 rooms, I have a kitchen approx. 8 x22 that has a stove, microwave and refrigerator and plenty of closet space, another room is 11x16 and this is going to be my shop, and my reloading /gun room is also 11x16.

As I mentioned about things changing for me when I became more interested in shooting local benchrest, that was a few years ago and that was when I discovered this 6mmBR web site now Accurate Shooter. I'm addicted, I am here every day all through the day! Thanks to you guys, things started to click for me. I have managed to befriend a few other local guys that are heavy into local benchrest shooting, and I am well on my way to being able to compete in the up-coming season. I have several gun projects underway, and I hope to have them up and running soon. I need to complete my gun room so I can work on loads for each of them here at my house instead of having to go to my dads.

Well, I just wanted to kind of tell my story and let you guys know that I enjoy all of your post and that I really spend way more time reading than posting on the forum. However I plan to post more now and get even more evolved in the forum. Just don't want to seem like a stranger! Thanks or reading my story, and I hope to add more soon.

Brandon, great story. Very similar to my own, except in my case it was my uncle who taught my father and myself. My Dad was an avid ground hog hunter and was always applying the little tricks I learned while shooting I.B.S. Hunter Class back in the day, to improve his Chuck loads. Your new room looks great and I'm sure will give you a lifetime of pleasure. For me reloading is therapeutic. I'm 62 yrs. old and have been reloading and shooting competitively since the late seventies and every time I go to the range or to a shoot, I still learn new things, I think the search for the one whole group is infinite but the journey is great, good luck and keep em all in the tten ring..........................Chuckhunter

Awesome story Brandon and congratulations... Something worth so much, is worth the work and waiting for.. Sounds like Dad can come over, make coffee and you and he can hang out & play with your toys....!!

Rod,

Yep, that's the plan. I hope I can get it going and not waste any more time. I have given up a few other hobbies over the last year to focus on my Gun Addiction. It's always been the other way around, with me going to his place. I guess time always changes things. I know that not many of the younger generation even show an interest in this kind of stuff. I want to keep it going and have a place for my kids and hopefully grandkids one day to come and learn a lesson or two just like I did.

Hi Brandon

Well, all I can say is great, super, fantastic man!!!!Nice story,I'm glad you finally came to terms with your passion and could get the time and means to complete it to your liking. What surprises me somewhat is the time you seem to have waited before finally giving in,but never mind,at least now you're sure you really liked and wanted it....Thanks for sharing and please keep us updated, and yes pix of the inside would be a nice plus...

I will post inside pics soon, I still have outside trim work , shutters and screen doors to hang. The inside of the gun room is almost complete, needs floor tile and I am going to do that in a RCBS checkerboard green and white ( I was a flooring installer for years so I might get fancy with it and incorporate a border edge. I changed the cabinets a bit an have one counter left to install. I will get inside pics soon. I promise!!!

That's really awesome. I heard on the radio the other day that man caves are becoming very popular again. Seems they were popular back in the 60's and dropped off in the 80's but are coming back strong. I have a reloading room but mine does not have a kitchen! Heck I don't even have a beer refrigerator in mine. Anyway, love the story and looking forward to pictures as you progress.

I really wish life had worked out for me like it has for you.I have always wanted to add on a room to do the same, but that will never happen for me.I really like what you did with the carport. It looks big as a house. The kitchen is a nice touch ,when you have fellow reloaders and such over and a quick meal is close at hand.I like the green and white tiles. You ought to tile RCBS right in the middle and send them a picture. Good luck and cant wait to see future pics as it is completed. One note,I hope there is going to be humidity control so you dont wake up to rusted tools and guns.Just a thought.

Wow! You're really going all out, I thought I was bad, just taking over one of our walk-in closets!

Great story. I love these kinds of stories much more than the usual "Should I buy a Ford or a Chevy" stories.

It's taken me many years to have my own special place. I spent 25 years moving around in the Military doing my reloading out of a box on the kitchen table, a corner of the garage, then as the kids grew up and left I had a bedroom to share with my wife's craft stuff. Now all the kids are grown and I took over the whole basement. I do share it with the dog but he's easy to get along with.

Have fun with your new digs and post photos when you get them.

Thanks guys,

I know it takes time to get to a position in life sometimes to where we can enjoy our hobbies. I feel very fortunate that when my wife and I bought our home place, it had belonged to an elderly retired couple. This was great for me, because the place had a huge potential. That exposed double carport with the Kitchen on the back just cried out to be converted into something much more useful. The kitchen is great for family gatherings or outdoor fish fry, and I use it a lot processing my deer meat. The reloading /gun room has Previously been my workshop until I closed in the other side of that carport and moved my shop there. That allows me to have my reloading room without having to sacrifice my shop space. It just seems like its been taking forever to get there, I guess I have too many irons in the fire. Trying to consolidate as I have ended many old hobbies, but between family commitments, work, mowing grass and general up keep at home, and deer season it just seems like my time is all spoken for. Nevertheless, I still have a plan and I won't quit working on it until one day, IT'S DONE....

[/quote] What a great attitude!...... Looks like you're almost there. Keep on keepin' on, we're all rooting for you.

Nice looking building - good luck with the project.

My reloading is in my home on the lower level of a two level. Some of my friends have separate buildings but few have heat and air. Do you have HVAC in the building?

Great story, thats not a reloading room thats a reloading mansion. I love it, wish you the best good shooting.
