My Savage died

So since i haven't worn out any of my three savage 6.5cm's yet and i don't load them hot or shoot them hot what round count can i expect them to live to? The highest round count i have is 850 in the 110 tactical which is still doing 1 1/2 to 1 3/4 groups at 300yds. It has simply been used with American gunner. The other two run on my loads which aren't loaded hot either.

I wonder how old the OP is being he has trouble remembering what the gunsmith told him and does not seem to be able to maintain his rifle

What makes you think I don’t know how to maintain a rifle? How old are you? You must be pretty young to post something this stupid. Don’t assume you know me or know anything about my gun habits.

Good for you. I can`t understand a comment like he made about you. Jackwagon had a hand in wrecking a thread the other day. Stay strong and hit ignore. Jeff

First get a new gunsmith, then some cleaning supplies like Wipeout, a cleaning rod and a brushand clean it. It will probably shoot great again. Or youtube how to rebarrel a Savage. Then order a barrel from Northland or similar, $300 for a new 6.5 CM barrel.

Ditto! That ditto was for getting a new barrel only. 1500 rounds is good for your barrel.

In fairness, there has been a lot of dumb going on in this thread.

$1000 for a new barrel?

6.5 Creedmor toast at 1500 rounds?

$125 to take 5 minutes to install a pre-fit barrel?

Don't need a new gun smith?

There's probably more, but those stood out pretty noticeably.

I have a Savage Model 10 GRS in 6.5CM. Lately it has not been grouping well so I took it in for a checkup. Gunsmith says the throat is completely shot. It’s cracked, pitted, and full of copper fouling that he said you could never get out. The gun is only 2-1/2 years old and has seen maybe 1500 rounds. I could rebarrel the thing but at this point I’m tempted to just scrap it. Any idea what would cause this? This isn’t the first problem I’ve had with it. When it was 6 months old I had to send it back to Savage because the chamber was so rusted I could barely open the bolt after I fired it. It lives in a safe in a temperature control room with a dehumidifier in the safe. I’m tempted to contact Savage and see what they say, but given it’s well past the warranty period I am probably out of luck. I love the gun, it shot lights out until it didn’t. I’m lusting over the new Daniel Defense Delta 5 Pro. It might be time for an upgrade.
your savage just needs some TLC like a Criterion or Krieger Barrel my 6xc is capable of .1's with 108 bergers large or small primer pocket, Criterion barrel...it will shoot small

In fairness , what words of wisdom do you have to add ?

This listing cought alot of action . From what I'm hearing from your gunsmith , I have to ask , did he let you see it for yourself through the borescope. Did you give your barrel a good cleaning with JB Compound ?Sometimes a good cleaning may change things . How often did you clean and what do you use . 1500 rounds shooting mild loads , did you pay attention to how hot your barrel was . I have a thermal strip label on my barrel better then just feeling. If it does need a change I would go with others posted and give it a try . You can always have a gunsmith to double check your work but find another Smith.

I thought most of the obvious answers were already covered, but the advice seemed to fall mostly on deaf ears. I think I was a little annoyed to still be awake last night after having coffee too late in the afternoon and might have gotten a little salty. My apologies for that but here's some "words of wisdom". Might be worth what they cost!

First, the barrel is more than likely just in need of a cleaning.
Words of Wisdom 1----Clean the barrel with a quality de-coppering agent and CLR. If there's that much copper, there's probably a lot of carbon too. Savage barrels look terrible right out of the box. You can't judge how it's going to shoot based on it's looks, especially when it comes to a Savage.

Words of Wisdom 2----Don't pay $1000 for a barrel unless the work was done by Jesus, or it comes with a chambering lesson.

Words of Wisdom 3 ----If a gunsmith is charging $125 for setting head space on a pre-fit barrel, he's not your friend. This literally takes 5 minutes to get perfect.

Words of Wisdom 4 ----There are at least a dozen quality smiths out there doing pre-fit and shouldered pre-fits for Savage and many others. The prices have gotten very competitive. Use the market to your advantage. Patriot Valley will spin you a threaded on both sides, chambered barrel for $425. Really hard to beat that and the barrels shoot.
