My old Daddy always said…. “UPDATE”

I would of seat them deeper in the case first to break the bullet weld, then they would of come out much easier.

If I have to do 50 or more pieces, I use the Hornady Collet puller.
I actually did do that buddy, just not the first one that I tried with inertia hammer but even after seating deeper they still pulled hard but not as hard as without.

Like many of you, this is the first time I've heard of this. It's a great reason to be wearing safety glasses. OP said he couldn't find the primer. I figure it exited out of the top of the puller through the hole in end of the hammer. If you're like me, you watch what's going on - probably at the end of the puller. If so, you'd be looking right at that primer. Yikes. I hate to think what could happen as it exited the puller.

Thanks buddy!…. I have several Collet pullers and lots of collets, I use my inertia puller same as you normally, I just wanted to pop one out real quick to see what bullet and powder was in them ,… why idk

P.S I did pull the rest with RCBS collet puller

I just can’t stand not knowing when something goes wrong and I don’t know why!…. So decided tonight I was going to reload the dasher brass minus powder and do it again but I had a couple phone calls and got sidetracked. I had two partial boxes of the Dasher brass, 34 in one box and 42 in another, it’s been 12+ years since I had the Dasher so I don’t remember much about it but I did find in my range book I loaded them the 8th of August 2012 CCI 400’s 33.0 grains of Varget and 107 smk’s ,I shot them in my 17lb gun on August 13th my Dads 79th birthday…. Took him with me to the super shoot at Deepcreek In Missoula Montana and shot it again Sunday the 14th after that I unscrewed the barrel and it became a 6brx and haven’t looked at the brass since. So since I had the bullets out I started de capping them, the first 34 was normal I removed them with a mallet and punch as I always do, second batch no resistance at all as a matter of a fact I could push some of them out by hand!… now why I loaded them like that I can’t answer but what I think happened when removing the bullets with the inertia hammer was the primer came out, it may have went off in the shell holder but the flame wasn’t directed at the flash hole or since I’m deaf in my left ear I can’t pinpoint direction of noise…. It could have hit the floor and went off I just heard a slight popping sound. At any rate I’m satisfied that this is what happened and makes sense why the round didn’t discharge in my face.

P.S Thank you for all the replies

never had it happen but i could see how a primer mite back out of a loose pocket in the inertia puller but i cant think of what could have caused it to ignite. seems like it would just fly out the hole in the cap. For sure we never know about these things. reminds us all to wear safety glasses all the time handling this stuff. as you know some people use a standard shell holder in an inertial puller. mabie this would be safer— kind of a blast shieldo_O—-carry on Sonny——- gramps

Gramps,
I was using a shell holder, I took the collet out and used a shell holder. I’m pretty sure it went off in the shell holder as the primer pocket was a little sooty, the other cases are still shiny but who knows?… whatever happened there wasn’t enough ignition to light the charge of powder off
Sonny boy ;)

Gramps,
I’m in the process of building a new reloading bench, so I wasn’t at my old bench as it’s really cluttered with tools why I’m building the new bench so I was at a small bench across the shop where my drill press sits, it could have hit the concrete floor, the drill press or any number of other things, at least I wasn’t in front of my powder shelves or primer shelves lol

I used an inertia puller for decades. Never a problem but I never had many to remove. (Sure isn’t a ‘pull’.)
Had many 308 cartridges given to me. Bought a RCBS collet puller. So pleased I bought collets for a number of bullets.
I’ve read about inertia pullers and people’s experience with the cartridge going off.
No, I don’t remember every story. I do recall they all used shell holders. What’s happening? Don’t know and have little interest, as I don’t know any of these people.
Did it cause me to buy a collet puller? Nope. I bought it strictly because I find it easier. And then I was given even more cartridges to do, so the inertia puller sits on the shelf. Probably forever.

thats interesting mabie the shell holder hit the primer as it backed out. i wont use the shell holder method inless i have to. like you though ive always had an inertia and never had a problem except losing the little collet pieces and the spring. dont know when i got the rcbs collet puller but ido like it thanks

Like both of you I’ve had both really from the beginning, I bought just enough stuff to get started, within a few months my brother in law wanted his little man cave cleaned out for his new hobby…. Computers… so I bought all his reloading gear which included an inertia and collet puller which I still have both. When I have a bunch to do I use the collet puller but when setting up a dummy round or two I usually always use the inertia hammer. I have always used the little collet that came with it but recently been using shell holders, I think this was the first time I ever pulled a live round with a shell holder come to think of it as usually there just dummy rounds I use it on,….. interesting?… Thanks for mentioning that part about all stories you heard of rounds going off were with shell holders M-61 . I think I’ll build some dummy rounds with cream of wheat and live primers with a lot of neck tension and see if I can get another to go off

well ive learned some - so it was probably the shell holder that caused it to go off.
i wont use those in that way anymore. thanks
