My First F-TR Target Rifle Build ( UPDATED )

XTR, I'll take you up on the small wager. How's $5000 sound.

And if what GNERGY has is a suppressor, then Savage is illegally selling their model with an adjustable muzzle brake. When their brake is "turned off" it has the same "baffles" that GNERGY has.

Lighten up!!

Gnergy,
Suppressor or covered muzzle brake, I don't care what you call it. It is not legal for Registered and Approved NRA competitions. Quite honestly, the rifle should have never been allowed to be used at the Berger SW Nationals. Club level matches are entirely different, most clubs will allow a wider variety of safe firearms.

Here is an excerpt from the front page of the NRA Competitions Match Application site:

"To insure competitive shooting activities are carried with the highest degree of care for the safety of all participants, spectators, and the general public, it is the sole and exclusive responsibility of the NRA Approved or Registered Tournament sponsor and the participating competitors to rigidly enforce all NRA official competition rules and regulations, all local range regulations, and specific range official instructions."

Take your chances with the BATF, and argue all you want on the internet forums. I simply ask that you respect the NRA rules and don't put the volunteers who run NRA matches in a difficult situation.

And if its not 1 dB quieter he loses $5000. :D Do you want the same offer, ryanjay?

The Savage is the Model 16/116 Bear Hunter. http://www.savagearms.com/firearms/models/

OK, Gentlemen,
I called the Phoenix Bureau of ATF and spoke with a technical agent and I described to him what I did and he fully understands muzzle brakes and suppressors ( silencers ) and he said if it doesen't reduce the noise level by a certain level it is NOT a suppressor. He asked me if I were to shoot the rifle without ear protection what would happen. I said my ears would ring like crazy. He said it would not be a considered a silencer. He said I could bring it down there next week and they would test it for me, and if the sleeve was considered a suppressor by any chance I could just give it to them. But he said it has to cut the noise down to a very tollerable level. It does not sound like it does.
Nomad was there when I have shot it and knows how loud it is.
So if I get some time next week I will stop by there.
I hope all this arguing will stop now.
If it was ME reading some other guys post I would say nice rifle and nice machine work and I wouldn't give 2 $$$$hitts if his rifle was illegal according to BATF and argue on here with other members. Everyone is entitled to their own opinion. I wouldn't tell somebody what they have is illegal, when you don't really know what you are talking about. Life is TOO short guys.
And if I enter another match with it and it passes is up to who runs the match. The ruling about muzzle brake not allowed is because it disturbs your fellow competitors. The competitors I showed it to at the Berger Nats said it is good to go because you're not disturbing your fellow shooters and that is why the rule was made. So if I shoot better than you and you contest it, that's OK , I am not doing this to make a living, and if I do get really good at F/TR I will REBARREL it. So let's get out and do some shooting and have some fun.

GNERGY,
I agree with your last post and have been following this thread since it creation. You did build a great looking rifle and I admire your creativity and craftsmanship. However, I think that most of the folks on here saying that you may have built a suppressor were simply trying to protect you. If you had built a suppressor, which you nearly did ( only would have needed more/bigger baffles/brake ports), you could have been in deep s*it when someone realized it wasnt registered with the ATF.

GNERGY good build and thank you for the pictures. Also thank you for getting involved in the sport. And pay no attention to the negative feedback. Some people need to lighten up.

Shoot what you like, that's all that matters!

I agree totally. Its your rifle do as you please. It looks like a fine piece of work and I do believe its gonna shoot well. Matt

I guess I dont understand? All that work to make a sleeve where it would have been just as easy to make a cap and avoid any issues at all .....like everyone else does. And for what? To prove a point?

Seems a bit silly to me i guess. No disrespect intended....I just dont get it.

If I had an extra $5K laying around, I would take your bet in a second.

The Savage you keep referencing isn't remotely close to what GNERGY built. He has a sleve around ports. The one you have shown is very similar to the Browning BOSS system. When you close it up, there aren't any baffles or chambers.

You honestly have no clue how suppressors work. Save your money and buy a book on suppressor design, or donate the $5K to GNERGY's lawyer fund. He will need it. Call me a chicken for not taking your bet if you want, but you should be happy I'm not taking you up on it.

I have recently been to a local gun store and took a VERY close look at the Savage Model 16 with adjustable brake. I have also taken a VERY close look at Tarey's brake. And now I can honestly say that Ryanjay is the one that doesn't have a clue.
The ONLY difference between the Savage adjustable brake and Tarey's brake is that Tarey cannot turn his to expose the ports.

I have personally looked at (closely, I might add) both the Savage brake and Tarey's - which is something you have not done.

I will repeat my $5000 wager offer. If you are so confident in what you are saying, why don't you borrow the money or have ten friends each put up $500.

Anyhow, politics and legalities aside, I love brakes, so here is what you can do. Work up a load with your brake on and open. Then make a tuner for your barrel which goes onto the same thread, then adjust the tuner so it works well with the same load you use for the brake.

I have done something similar with my 6 Dasher 1000yd LG/F class gun. My gunsmith made a barrel cap around the same weight and length as my brake, and I use this for F class. The tuner, or lengthened barrel cap should be cheap and simple to make for you.
