700 F/TR Build Questons

Almost all of my FTR shooters are shooting 30-32" heavy palma barrels. Depending on the bullets they are shooting to what rate of twist they are using. 1:12, 1:11.27, 1:10, 1:9. I would recommend using a .250 recoil lug instead of the .187 factory lug. If you are going to use a .250" recoil lug you may want to shorten it by .125". This makes it stiffer and flex less. If you are going to add weight use a water bottle and string around the stock to determine how much weight your going to add. If you fill the hollow cavity of the but stock with lead shot seal it with epoxy to secure it. make sure your rig does not does not exceed the weight limit with the bipod attached.

although I am not a T/R shooter (yet), I do shoot open. I always like to go with a little faster twist. I think an 11 or a 10 will serve you well in that length you want. the reason being, you might find that the 185 jug shoot good, but eventually want a little lest wind drift at 1000 yards, and you may want to try the 200-215 berger hybrids. you could also cut it back to say 28" and go with a full profile barrel. you gain more rigidness but sacrifice a little velocity (which is not too big of a concern).

My stock weighs 4.9 lbs, I have a 30" heavy palma barrel on it with a sinclair gen 3 bipod and a 10-50 sightron and my rig weighs 17.1 lbs. That should give you an idea.

what twist do you run in your barrel and with what bullets? how do you like your sightron? I run an 8-32x56 on my open rifle--love it

10 twist, 185 Bergers, and yes I like the Sightron allot. Not quite as clear as the 8-32 on highest power but pleased with it overall.

have you tried anything heavier than the 185s? I have been looking into getting a T/R rifle built with 10 twist shooting 185+bergers, but with a much shorter barrel.

I run a 30" barrel that I had throated for the 215's above the neck junction. I found two velocity nodes with the 215. The bottom node gave no advantage over a good 185 jug load. The upper node shot well, I just could not stay consistent enough on the gun to manage recoil reliably.

One day I decided to load some 185's out to the same length. It left a lot less bulletin the neck than I was comfortable with....until I shot it! I had to up the powder charge to make up for the extra case volume of the 185 seated so far out. Last match I shot, my ballistics put me at 2830 for velocity to match my come up for the x ring.

The juggernaut at that speed is no slouch if you are patient on conditions and catch the switches.
