My current 260 Remington

That's right, those barrels were only 20". I built a 760 in 260Remington a few years back because the 700/7 short actions limit how far out you can seat the bullet. My son hunts with a 260 I built on a 700 long action for the same reason. As if I don't have enough 260's I am thinking about putting together a mountain rifle with a wrapped carbon barrel....
After working with this rifle and its limitations, it makes me wonder about a 260AI.

Yep, I am giving a lot of thought to that as well...I have several AI rifles and like all of them. In fact, several shooting/hunting buddies have commented as to why I didn't go that route from day one. Looking at a Sako 85, mag length is a little better.

I think they call that a Creedmoor
I'm only getting 2740fps with 136gr scenar's in the 6five, 22" barrel. Its actually outperforming the 260.
Now a 260 Improved should push 140's comfortably to mid 2900fps.

Hey’ I got a buddy that runs a 260 Akley and that thing hauls Ass for sure.
Love Um

The 260 has a little more case capacity than the Creed...in the reloading manuals the only way it outdoes the 260 is with "Superformance" powder. I think a 260AI with heavy bullets and a 26" barrel and some Reloder 26 might just get the job done.

Don't know how I lost my way from here last year but I did indeed hunt Oklahoma with my 260 and also have used it some here in Texas for coyotes and pigs. The 100 grain Partition loaded to a bit faster than 3200 fps seems plenty though nothing so far has been much farther than 125 yards away when hit other than one coyote. I know it doesn't make much sense but it seems to me I am getting ballistics only a bit more than a 243 offers but the effect seems much better on game. Also the 90 gr. TNT at the same speed is a heck of a round. It doesn't exit all the time on pigs but they really hit the ground hard when that bullet hits behind the shoulder. I wish the bullet supply chain would catch up with my shopping wants.

Berger 130 AR Hybrids in a 260 are a perfect match. You can shoot them at 2950 ish with H4350. They have shot very small in two different 260's, and they kill stuff bang-flop dead.

If you cross on over to the 260AI side you will be a happy camper no doubt. It's good enough I own 2 and I wouldn't trade either one for anything else.

I went 6.5-284, shot a charge weight test today with RL22 and the 136.
I also shot a charge weight test with 123gr scenar in the creedmoor with IMR4166.
I found my charge window and the high side of charge weight in both.
Seating depth test to follow.

Sounds like you making progress no doubt.

Ha ha ha ha, wondered how long that would take. Needmore will always be one step behind the good old 260 Rem. Nice try tho. Yes the 6.5-284/6.5 PRC are step ups for sure but the 260 Rem with a 24-28" barrel is a great performer. The 20" barrel handicaps the cartridge a bit. Going ackley will help but no way I'd do an ackley on a 20" barrel. Something just doesn't seem right about that combo. Like going 20" on a magnum cartridge. Works but defeats the purpose IMO. The 260 AI is only roughly 90-120fps behind the 6.5-284. Definitely a good option. Many guys upgrade to the AI because having all the brass for the 260, makes sense.

I purchased my daughter a .260 Rem SPS when they first came out and dropped it in a CDL wood stock, bedded the action, floated the barrel and did a trigger job. She shoots a handloaded Sierra 120gr Pro Hunter and that's the only bullet she has ever used in this rifle. The rifle is very accurate and just a pleasure to shoot and this combination has proven to be pure deer poison around here and kills them like a lighting strike. The .260 is no doubt a very fine caliber and one of my favorites.
