260 rem in medium action??

Why would you not need that much length for a 260?

The case length of a 6.5 PRC, 7 SAUM, and 6.5 SAUM is the same as a 260. The WSM's are only about a 1/16" longer.
If he sticks with his plan on shooting 140’s I don’t think he would need the XM length. He needs to be careful with freebore/throat dimensions if he likes to shoot at the lands.
Before I built my rifle I picked the case/bullet combo I wanted to shoot. It was 65 PRC & I wanted 156s for hunting & 153.5s for 1000 yd target. With the boattail-bearing junction at the case neck/shoulder junction you need ~ 3.1”. I built strictly for long heavy for caliber projectiles. Thus, the reason for the XMs on my part. Have a great day!

The 260 is handicapped slightly by the 2.8 restriction. Even getting to 2.85 makes a big difference in my guns. 3 or 3.1 would make it capable of significantly outperforming the CM, especially if you AI the 260.

Most consider what is best when the barrel is brand new, how about how the throat has lengthened 600 rounds down the road? Duhhh....

Logical conclusion for mag length considerations are two fold:

A. Wyatt's mag box which includes opening up the action

B. 6.5x47 Lapua gives great latitude on OAL, especially when you get the Wyatts mag box.

C. use a long action. I promise you will not start talking with a lisp or start walking around limp wristed if you use
a long action, adds only 6 oz more weight to the gun.

D. I cannot remember the last time I fired two shots on a deer. For this reason, to attain the very best accuracy in terms of Cartridge base to the lands for long range shooting, use the rifle as a single shot.
I know that this mind set of a single shot bucks the trend of carrying a detachable magazine with 10 shots in it. I just kept loosing the magazine or leaving it at home!

Years ago I had a long range rifle built and chambered for a 6.5’08 panther round (almost identical to a .260 rem.) I used a long action 700 and it worked great. It was a slow fire 1000 yd gun. 20 rounds in 20 minutes. Since it was a single load course of fire I installed a sled and never loaded from the magazine. I’m sure it would have worked fine anyway.
Yep me too and it fed just fine never had a problem .

You can put a Wyatt’s magazine in a short action Remington at three different lengths now. 3.0” , 3.11” , and 3.22”. It takes a little machine work but I’ve been very happy with mine. The 3.11 how would allow plenty of room. The lengths are off the top of my head so they might be .01” longer or shorter.

If the OP decides to go the long action route, I'd suggest the 6.5-06. Feeds out of any long action designed for the '06 family without any work, and does all a 6.5-284 can do. Neck up .25-06 or neck down .270, and if Lapua brass is desired, make it out of .30-06. Plus a nice long neck for flexible seating depth.

Does anyone have any experience with medium size actions? I am working up to my first rifle build and would like to put together a 260 Remington mainly for long range, medium game hunting with the occasional match at the gun club so the 260 rem seems like a happy medium.

I understand that the COAL for this cartridge is 2.800” which makes it long for a short action as is. I plan on using 140gr VLDs and don’t want to seat them deep if I don’t have to.

I don’t hear much about medium actions and am curious if it would benefit me?

Much thanks!

Dean
I have a Definance Deviant hunter action I ordered from the good folks at Definance. I specifically ask for a medium action because I wasn't sure what I was wanting to build at that time. I ended up having a 6x47 Lapua built because I too was worried about not having enough room to run heavier bullets in relation to the lands. If you get a medium action and you try to feed it through a regular bdl style bottom metal you may end up having feeding issues with it. I'm using a HS percision bottom metal with detachable magazine and it works great.
My buddy had one built the very same set up exactly except he chose to use a bdl style bottom metal and he has feeding issues with his.

In Sept 2021 I built a 260 Rem rifle throated out to 3.0" OAL on a 1903 Turkish action.
It shot a 1/2" (3) shot group to sight in, and shot a deer in Oct 2021.

I run a Defiance XM and can confidently recommend it for a long throated 260. It would be even better as a 260AI. The AI would likely feed a bit better in an XM DBM, and the combination of extra boiler room & bullet length of the 150 class bullets in 6.5 would be fantastic.

I have thought pretty hard about a 308AI for that rifle with a 195-210 seated as long as possible. Still wouldn’t use up the full 3.220”. I made some 308 dummy rounds with some 195TMKs that came out to 3.050” iirc... Wouldn’t chamber in my barrel, but feeding was good through the XM length MDT box magazine until the bullet jammed. Again, I think an AI version would feed even better with the shorter base to shoulder dimension of the 308 case. Reduced body taper and a slightly forward shoulder datum, to contact the follower ramp, would present the bullet a bit better.

I have a 260 tac running 140s on a defiance devient. If I could do it over again Id do it on a long action. I wont rebarrel it for this action again its too long of round. Same issue doing a 284 on a short or medium action when it just needs a long action.

I think it would be a benefit on a 260.

I would like to have a couple of those actions myself. If someone ever makes a BDL style bottom metal that I like, I will buy a couple of them.
I do, too. Tweaking .260 to longer throat, faster twist, and more oal can push this pretty close to 6.5-284 performance.

They always came from remington in a medium action (remington only has short and long 700btw) or a model seven. Never was a problem shooting the 140-142 bullets with the right freebore

My F/open gun is a 260AI and built on a 700SA. I run the Berger 153.5 at 3.109" COAL, I cannot eject a live round. My last barrel I shot the 140vldt and coal was 2.950".
