260 Remington custom

I wonder how many older cartridges benefit with faster twists?

Have a 700 22-250 that I think the barrel is gone, no bullet/powder combo will do worth a flip in it, 40-55gr range and .010”-.020 off the lands. It’s a stainless with jewel trigger, and hs stock. So, if that’s the case, I may be looking at a barrel swap and stock and calling it a day. The stock now won’t go anywhere as I like it, but a fat barrel ain’t squeezing in it.

Ive put off ordering anything yet because of trying the 22-250. If it needs a new tube? I’ve had custom 700’s and 40x’s in the past, other than the bolt not falling out when tipping the gun up, I could never shoot the difference between them and stolle’s or nesika’s in the same calibers.

So, what do you guys think? Lipstick the pig since I don’t compete and don’t do better than what the 700 will do, or go the full monty financial embarrassment route and have a shiny showroom new hot rod?
IF, you use, your existing, SHORT Rem 700 .22-250 Action, I would go with, the 6.5x47 Lap OR, a 6.5 Creedmoor,..
due to, Feeding issues from any of, the Longer COAL cartridges, from that, action Length.
You could also try to find, a Shot out Tikka if, going, .260 Rem. and Modify it, as Necessary.
But IMO, you will want, a Medium action for, the .260 Rem. !
Getting 130's to go over 2,800 FPS with awesome accuracy is, NO Problem, for either of, the 6.5' s that, I listed.
Personally, I'd find the proper, 1-8 twist, semi - Heavy, Barrel that, Fit's in your stocks barrel channel and go with it,.. to SAVE Money, since your NOT, a BR, "Competitor" and,.. go have some Fun !

Lip stick on a pig, or a silk purse out of a sows ear..
Look at a #5 contour not to light not to heavy..

@ Dfish ,..
Your Rem 700 Short action HAS most of the "ingredients" needed, to make for, a very Accurate Rifle.
I have, an H-S Prec. Stock, Jewell Trigger and, a New Rem 700 Action that, I used to make, a Sweet shooting "BugHoling" Varmint Rifle in 6 xc with, a stiff, Medium Heavy, 24inch, "Sporter" Criterion barrel (.705 dia Muz ).
I added, a custom made, Wooden, V-shaped "Bag Rider" to the Toe, to aide in "Tracking" when in, the leather Rabbit ears, Bag. H-S stocks have too much, Toe to Pistol grip Angle, for accurate Bench Shooting,. IMO.
But, H-S Prec.. stocks have, an Aluminum "Cage" and, PILLARS, that strengthen, the Fiber Glass Stock and, AFTER Glass Bedding properly, they really, "Shoot" !
If, you want, a "Repeating" Varmint Rifle,.. AVOID,.. the .260 Rem., in THAT, action.
6.5 Creedmoor IS,.. the EZ Button !

@ Dfish fyi and, any other, 6.5 Creedmoor,.. "Doubter's",..
You NEED to Watch,.. Texas Plinking, 1 MOA at 1,000 yards, Challenge, on YouTube,.. session #3 and, 3rd Shooter, Courtney, as she forms, a small group next to, the 10 inch Plate, with FACTORY 143 grain ELD-X's then Hits the Plate, on 4th or, 5th shot, then Hit's, the 5 inch Plate !
Any doubter's WILL probably, change your Mind about, the little 6.5 Creedmoor's, ACCURACY at, Long Range after watching Courtney Shoot her Custom, 6.5 Rifle !
The 6.5 Creed, is One of the Top choice's, used by several Winners of, this Event along with, some FAST, 6MM's.

I’m well aware of what the creedmore will do, just flat don’t want one. I am a stick in the mud I guess. Same with the gt’s, arc’s, grendel’s, etc. I don’t see anything a they do better than the classic br case. The 100-200yd classes, ppc hasn't aged a bit either.

The 6 creedmore I have some interest in. I’d like to see what it would do with lighter bullets instead of heavy ones. Curious if it’s better than a 243.

It’ll be a couple months, but I’ve ordered a bartlein 1:8 barrel for the 700. Standard chamber and throat.

In the meantime, I picked up a Wilson remage 243ai 1:8 to play with. Waiting on the go/no go gauges and nut wrench to show up, then find a load.

My current F-Open rifle was origanaly was a left over Brux MTU 6.5mm 1:9 twist barrel from 12-15 years ago. So now it is a 6.5CM and is 29.5 inches long. In fact I have 100 pieces of NOS LAPUA 260 brass laying around.

It is a fairly new build and I have not made it past 139gr. bullets yet but so far so good. So far 123gr. to 139gr. bullets from Berger, Sierra, Barnes, Hornady have all shot fantastic!

If I was using a current barrel I would go no slower than 1:8 but would likely go 1:7.5 just to play it safe.
