Most tolerant 1,000 yard cartridge ?

Russ,
I am glad to here you are back from .stan :) and agree that the 6.5*284 that I have is all the recoil I want. Good luck to you in your shooting this year.
Wayne.

Thanks Wayne
Still not back yet but getting very close. Missing out on a years worth of friends and match's has been very hard. Though the Canadians let me shoot there 338 Lapua Mag Sniper rifle last week. Prairie Gun Works Timberwolf action and S&B scope.. Very Very Nice. Its a tack driver too with Lapua Factory ammo and 250gr Scenars. To heck with the Barret and no acceptable ammo available. Which would you rather shoot a Rifle designed to be a 2MOA gun with crap ammo or a precision tack driver with excellent ammo capable of 1/2MOA.....

Wayne I agree with you! It is a sexy rifle!! Russ I love the Can! The 338 Lapua has always appealed to me. I just have no place for it in my disciplines of shooting, but like I said the Ballistics of the 338 Lapua is appealing, and impressive!

What, you mean to tell me that the American's training and marksmanship skills can't make up for the poor quality ammo that we are provided for our .50BMG sniper systems? Or that there could possibly be a better alternative available and we are not equipping our troops with the best possible equipment available? I don't believe it. ::)

Russ, that rifle does look like it could be fun. Maybe one could accidentally fall into your ruck and make it back to the states? ;D Stay safe over there.

I do agree the .338 Lapua has some very good looking ballistics, but the cost of operating one, along with the brutal muzzle blast from the brake, when you don't have the luxury of a can that is, are just too much and I could never justify owning one strictly for fun. Although I would really like to have an Anzio Ironworks .338 Lapua take-down rifle. ;D That .37MOA guarantee sure looks good to me! If I could get other barrels in more practical chamberings it would be a bit more useful and may be worth a $4700 investment.

Kenny,
That's really want I meant! The Ballistics are awesome. However It would cost just as much to load for the 338 lapua if not just under what you could load the .50cal for! If I ever hit the lotto then maybe! Heck if I hit the lotto I would probably go with a 416 barret! Even more impressive IMO! As far as something to shoot for fun! I do like the Can! Like I said tho! If I could only hit the lotto! After all the ATF paper work and buying the Can! Your probably looking at $1500 or more just for the Can! I must say the rifle does say you can run but you can't hide! ;D

Civilian F Class practise on a Canadian Army base in Ontario has seen flareups of .50 cal and .338 Lapua use. Canadian civilians can only own a single shot .50 cal, no magazine.

Main problem is the muzzle brake that must be used with these rifles to make recoil tolerable. The side blast is unbelievable. We stick them ten positions away from the Palma, F(O) and F/TR shooters during a practise session.

The kicker is that muzzle brakes cannot be used in F Class competition so these guys are just out for the macho fantasy of it all.

The .50 cals disappeared 2 years ago. Shooters were complaining of sore necks, sore shoulders, headaches and blurred vision even though they were using 25 lb rifles with muzzle brakes.

Some switched to the .338 Lapua in heavy rifles but their numbers are slowly diminishing due to cost of ammo. Occasional practise doesn`t cost too much but if they want to get into sniper style events that allow muzzle brakes then the cost of serious continuous practise and competition becomes prohibitive. And recoil over a long match even with a heavy rifle and muzzle brake becomes tedious half way through a day.

Back in the days of yore when dinosaurs roamed the earth...

Remember the Sierra loading manual having a special page dedicated to the accuracy of the 7mm-300 Weatherby, so I guess the 7mm caliber has come around again in competition shooting.

One 1K shooter down in Mobile spent a year cursing the 6.5/284. At least he did every time I bought his dinner. Think he gave the 6.5/284 up. He also gave up drinking and joined the church. The next year he competed with the 260 Remington or a wildcat made from it and was able to quit the meds for high blood pressure.

Will have to look into this 220 Swift thing. Can you still get factory Winchester ammo with 48 grain bullets for the Swift ?

I shoot a 6BRX works great for 600 and 1000yds. What you have will be fine. Start shooting and see what you need.
