Most Popular Chamberings for LG & HG @ 1,000yds

We'll I didn't shoot a true heavy gun in 20/20 and I got tired of getting my ass kicked with true heavy guns in the thousand yd discipline so I'm going back to the old roots and shoot a 30 caliber and heavy gun.
I bought a new heavy gun in which will be called (Big Red) so look out I will be ready.20210116_144650_HDR-1.jpg

Nice!!!

Most true heavy guns weigh 60 plus pounds and use a 1.450 straight. Matt

There seems to be an East/West divide. In the West we have a lot of 25-30 lb heavy guns. They seem to shoot as well as the 60-70 pounders. Then again, 17 lb LGs routinely beat 25-70 lb HGs in the heavy class.

That said, after I get moved and can finish it, I will have a 30 lb 300 WSM that also has a 6 BRA barrel. It will weigh about 28 lbs as a BRA. I chambered both barrels recently as I am packing up my lathe and mill today. I also have an LRB stock to inlet for this rifle. Thought I should practice on the $200 wood stock first.

I need to finish up a couple exterior things, add weight, and bed it. All that I can do without the mill or lathe.

It seems that the post has become about breaks. I have guns with breaks and with out breaks. Historically, the non have shot better. They are all 8 twist barrels, chambered in a Dasher. All with the same reamer. I can not prove anything but I believe that when the bullet breaks free of the barrel that’s the most important thing for it’s flight to the target. If the gases are existing through multiple sources, that could potentially upset the stability of the bullet. I feel that a clean break between bullet and barrel is extremely important. Again, just my opinion.

What wins has to do with each range. The most accurate case may get beat by one with better ballistics when conditions are poor. The most accurate case may win when conditions are good. Winning does not always mean most accurate.
In order to compare fairly, I believe the mix should be close to 50/50. I also believe you need a fair amount of rifles. That will help to take the range or conditions out of the equation. I would almost bet that if you went and looked at all those aggregates, many times the WSM was in the top 10 more then half. That would also make the range less important. It isn't then that one or two got lucky or more about the range making it happen. Matt

@INTJ

Are you planning to get over to deep creek now that you're closer?

Tom

Absolutely. I am looking forward to shooting with you guys! And just wait until you hear what my new job is.......

My LG is tuned and doing well, though it is tuned for about 500' and I think I'll need to adjust bit for 3000.

Right now my heavy action--a BAT M, is at BAT getting the ejection port opened a bit.

@newbieshooter was giving me the scoop on how matches are run at Deep Creek just a few hours ago.

So, it sounds like the 300 WSM and other 30’s have a popular following.

Im wondering if a lowly 284 Win has a chance to “pull up a chair with the thrash hands”?

Boy with all those big boomers at Deep Creek, maybe I'll bring my 20 Vartarg with me in April. The little 55 Berger at 3300fps do better than most expect at 1000yds and I'll have a built in excuse when I finish last. :p If I'm going to finish last, I want to do it in style!

Ultimately, it’s all about the luck of the draw. You can spend countless hours preparing for your match, but the good Lord above has the ultimate say. You can’t persuade Mother Nature. People will give their honest advice, but when it’s your turn, and you have done your do diligence. It will pay off, no matter what caliber you focus on.
