Moly Coating using the Wet method

I just finished (two boxes) the second batch of bullets (85 Gr Hornady Interbond) using this wet method. This time I used HOT water and Dawn Ultra. I washed in the Dawn for about 15 minutes, then washed them off thoroughly...Put them in an old 1 lb powder bottle and poured a little over one measuring cup of HOT water on them. Then I added a heaping half teaspoon of Moly, capped it and mixed it up good. Then, I poured it all in the RCBS Sidewinder. There was a little of the moly/water left from the last batch--maybe 3/4 of a cup. After 3 hours I strained them, and poured them on several paper towels and rubbed them slightly dry. Then, I poured them on an old towel that I had cut in half and "see sawed" them back and forth until dry. They are just like Black chrome-dark and the moly doesn't rub off on fingers.....This has to be the best method for Moly coating bullets. They are almost too pretty to shoot !!!!! Thanks again for all the great advice....

I know this is an old thread but just molyed my 1st batch of bullets today. No mess, no issues. Can't believe I waited this long to try the wet method. My kit is a little something from each post in this thread.

From Thread #14, It works and so much better then the old way. Good shooting.. will take abut 1 more grain of powder to get same velocity. And around 3 to 5 shots to settle down in a clean barrel,,

I used 1 measuring cup of distilled water and 1 1/2 teaspoons of moly. There was a little moly left in the drum from dry coating. Its been in about and hour now. I will check it in another hour and see how it looks. Thanks again for all the help.....
Maybe too much water i use a cheap harbor freight Tumblr 1 teaspoon Of Molly 1/4 cup of hot water for 100 bullets and I tumble for two hours also I just swished the bullets around in acetone to clean them at first I skipped that part sorry no need for distilled water but I’m sure it would not hurt I just use regular tapwater After tumbling I spread them out on paper towels in a cookie sheet and I use my heat gun to dry them I can dry 100 bullets in five minutes The last step is polishing you put the 100 dried bullets into a tube sock and lift each end alternately rolling the bullets back and forth for 30 to 50 strokes and they will come out like black chrome

I have been using it since 2010 when the original article was published in precision shooter magazine. I’m still using it and firmly enjoy the benefits. I reuse all material and only add moly to the container. I don’t clean the bullets and let the stainless 5/64 ball and slurry impede the moly. Mist with water and reclaim material and add moly occasionally, still working for me.

View attachment 1186778 I enjoy all the people interested in this thread I have been using Molly for a couple years is all but I’ve read in several places no one is interested or uses Molly anymore everyone is using other materials well I disagree and this thread just reinforces my opinion

Agree, the selling point for me is that it’s attached to the jacket and can’t be easily wiped off.

The water and Molly creates a chemical etching/bond and adherence to the bullet. Science.....

I have told this story before but here it is again. I have a Varmint gun chambered 243 in a Hart Barrel that has over 8000 rounds through it and it still shoots 1 in. groups at 100 yds. It has only shot Molly bullets and H380 Ball powder... Go figure....

In my 65x284 Norma which we all know is a barrel burner my first barrel was showing signs of deteriorating accuracy at 8 to 900rounds it was replaced at 1100 rounds my second barrel has used Molly from the beginning I am at 1600 rounds and still going strong

I had a shilen 1x8 twist in 22-250 put on a ruger target rifle to shoot the 75 gr Amax at the time. very accurate with standard 75 gr then the moly hysteria came into being so I got some. after 10 shots the rifle was like a shotgun. I called the guy that put the barrel on told him and he said throw the moly bullets away and clean the moly out. it seemed in my barrel to fill in the rifling. I tried every solvent made to dissolve the moly .I would try it in the bullets first
nothing worked until the guy told me use Isoso . that did the trick and accuracy was restored. I wonder why guys have success with moly bullets after seeing what happened with my rifle

The answer is very clear!!

Moly didn't do that...

No matter how much you might convince yourself it was the moly. My guess is you had a bad batch of moly bullets.

I use the wet method and really like it. The bullets come out looking like black chrome with no or hardly any moly rubbing off on your fingers. I use a white plastic bottle with a screw on lid typical of the kind that 500 daily vitamins come in. I add bullets (100 125 grain 30 cal TNT) to the bottle and add enough water to just about wet all the bullets but not so much to cover them. Use a tablespoon to add until about right. I then use the large strait blade screwdriver bit from my assortment kit as a shovel and put in two scoops of powdered Moly. Put bottle in my model B Thumblers tumbler and tumble for about three hours. You will learn to make more and more precise doses of water and moly that suite your requirements as you go. My water does not evaporate and i re use it and just add whats needed ....more moly and more water. I lastly just pour out the bullets on newspaper to dry then sort of shoe shine them in an old t shirt. Easy and quite clean too.

.
Water in hollow points ? Ever check carefully ?

how could I not be convinced it was the moly when the rifle went back to normal after the moly was removed? even the guy that put the barrel on knew the moly was causing shotgun groups from his experience. in my case it seemed like the moly filled in the grooves in the rifling ruining accuracy.
