Missoula, MT LR & F-Class Northern Rockies *Update on pg 2 for sling tournament*

Re: Missoula, MT LR & F-Class Northern Rockies Tournament at Deep Creek Rifle Range

Ron was that the big, gray scope I saw setup at the firing line? If so, the view was pretty awesome - but I don't know if I'm adding that to the 100lbs of gear I already haul around... ;)

Also, you and Praveen should consider the Wenatchee match coming up in a few weeks that Monte posted about. Sounds like a good match, I hope I'm able to make it myself.

No, it was actually the red and white one about the size of a regular spotting scope setup behind firing station #4 at the 1000 yard line on the second tier. Not sure whose scope that big one was but it was big.

Just talked to Praveen this morning about the Wenatchee match. We think we'll go. It's an easy drive for both of us with him coming from Seattle and me from Spokane. Maybe we can even get our wives to go and see why it's become kind of a addiction. There is also a match in October at Rattlesnake. We were talking about going to that one as well.

Re: Missoula, MT LR & F-Class Northern Rockies Tournament at Deep Creek Rifle Range

I read my name a couple of times so I thought it was time I registered.

I won't be able to make it to the match on Oct 4-5. Ron, you should go to that one.
According to the wsrpa website, there is another one in Wenatchee on Nov. 8th and that's the one Ron and I were talking about this morning.

Jamey,
I was telling Randell that this was the most interesting match I have been to so far. Thanks for setting it up and running it smoothly. I'll try to make it to Missoula as much as I can.

Jamie, thanks for running a great match!

I had a great time in Missoula and combined it with vacation - I stayed and visited Glacier and Yellowstone National parks. I will definitely try to go next year too!

I had a great time being squadded next to Jay and Monte - and pulling targets for Tim and John.

And for anyone wondering; Deep Creek is not an indoor range - there is wind, trust me ;-)
- I don't think the flags, mirage and sand bursts ever agreed on what was going on. It will take me some more practice to figure out what's going on there ???

Re: Missoula, MT LR & F-Class Northern Rockies Tournament at Deep Creek Rifle Range

Guys,

On behalf of all those involved with putting on the tournament, we thank you for attending and all the kind words. We are particularly happy with the amount of new shooters (both juniors and adults) we are seeing develop each year. The sling match is coming up next weekend and we already have 45 people signed up for that. We are happy with the attendance between both weekends and it should help greatly with justifying the expense of getting electronic targets in the future.

I will edit this post to add any additional info from the F-open guys:

  • John Bruce was firing a 7 SAUM with 180 bergers.
  • Robert Hoppe was firing a 6 dasher with his own manufacture bullets
  • The big gray scope seen on team day is a Unertl M-100 scope that the Montana Rifle and Pistol Association acquired. Old, but fantastic, but it is hard to get into prone and get it next to you. :)
  • It was interesting to see that Niklas, shooting F-TR tied for the second highest X count among all shooters. He was well in front of all the F-TR guys. Once he has the wind dialed in at Deep Creek, he will give the F-Open guys a run for it.

******************Update to the second part of the Northern Rockies - Sling Tournament.******************

Friday - Day 1 Team matches
With ominous weather forecasted for the weekend, the tournament got under way on Friday afternoon with seven 4 man teams vying for the top position. The weather held, although overcast. Numerous cleans were fired at the 800yd line of the Palma format team match. Two teams really ran away from the field after the 900yd stage with some great individual performances. Second place went to the team from USTacticalSupply.com consisting of Spiker, Hering, Benjamin, and Solis. First place went to the All Guard Gold Team of Jenks, Coggshall, Kerin and Mackey. Of those eight men, all of them went on to shoot very well during the individual matches and they also occupied the top 6 places - all with Palma rifles.

Saturday - Day 2 Individual Matches
The second day of the tournament began with continued overcast skies, but otherwise great conditions. At the 1000yd line, shooters had 1/2 min of windage on with 1/4 min changes. Although the skies were a little dark, the conditions were incredible. Highlights of day 2 included a perfect Palma score fired by Allen Spiker; 450-33X and John Coggshall's clean at 1000yds. The top eight or so positions were only separated by a handful of points after 65 record rounds went down range. Going into day 3, there was the potential to see 2 more national records fall by shooters in Missoula.

Sunday - Day 3 Individual Matches
All weekend there was a large storm front coming up thru Utah, Southeast Idaho and into Montana. The precipitation avoided the tournament in Missoula, but brought some moderate winds on Sunday. In spite of the pick up in conditions, the top five spots were only separated by 6 points. Some great aggregate scores were posted, and Allen Spiker came out on top earning the gold medallion by shooting a 1090-62X (out of a 1100-110X possible). Close behind and only a few points part were three of the All National Guard Marksmanship team members -Jenks (Silver), Kerin (Bronze), and Coggshall. High Senior was Bud Solis, Top Woman was up and coming Linnea Andersson. The Montana Long Range Champion is Neil Adams for the 6th time in 7 years.
