2018 Northern Rockies NRA Long Range Tournament F-Class and Sling - Missoula, Montana

These are my observations:

This was our first Deep Creek Match and it did not disappoint. Jamey let our rag tag group form a team of Two (Cheryl & Tim) to shoot a couple of sighters at the Palma Team Match. As the day progressed we had 4 more shooters join our group and all got a couple of shots to get zero dope. Great accommodation from the club and we all had a ball.

Saturday dawned and we arrived at the range to get squadded. The Deep Creek crew squaded us promptly and the Palma match began.

800 yds was what I had heard Deep Creek was all about. Very light wind and huge scores were shot.

900 yds was quite different for me. On our relay the targets turned very dark and you could barely make out the rings. Wind was not strong but had very subtle switches. This was the most challenging relay for me.

1000 was more wind (really quick changes) and the amount of flags make it very difficult to make your call. The shooter did not perform up to his expectations.

The first 1000 for the 1000 matches was right about the same as the Palma 800. It was shot (for me) in the late afternoon and had light and wind subtle changes. A great learning experience.

Sunday:
The first couple of relays were what I experienced on Saturday. Very light and small change conditions. Lots of good scores

2nd relay we shot last. The range does change as the day moves on. The clouds had partial sun or partial clouds which ever you prefer. Vertical was definitely present but could probably be explained by the mirage and sun going in and out of the clouds.

What did I take away from the match?
1. Learn low wind changes.
2. Learn how to read very low velocity mirage.
3. Montana shooters are great folks.
4. Target pullers are fantastic.
5. It takes a lot of work to put on a match of this caliber.

I would encourage everyone to come to the event next year. Good range, good fun, great prizes and great staff.

Thank you Jamey, Bob, Eric, Don and all of the Range staff I did not meet.
