I am building up a 98 as we speak. I purchased a lathe 1 year ago and have been building tooling for accurizing the 98 over the past year.
Building your own tooling helps with your machining skills. You will learn fast what is good and what isn't.
I have built an action mandrel and a bolt lapping jig that screw into the action.
The tooling you see in Brownells can be built saving many $$$$.
Using the lathe I also turned a new bolt handle, cut off old handle and welded the new handle on. A new handle can be bought for $10 to $20 dollars but why spend when I have the machines to do the work. MY TIME IS FREEEEE!!!
I was lucky and purchased this Mauser as a complete sporterized mauser in the 70's.
I have been wanting to do a custom build for quite sometime. Over the years I have purchase a Jewel trigger, complete new bottom metal with hinged floor plate for $40 at a gun show (Looks like the $200 metal today).
I just ordered a Hart 1-9 palma contour for a long range rifle I plan on building with a Shehane Tracker stock.
I say by all means continue to build your 98.

Jdaniel,

Good luck and have FUUUUN in reward of your FREEEE time....

Just a tip, FWIW: If you 'true' the action, do correct both collar and front of action surfaces, and manage to have depth of both matching barrel shank lenght as close as possible, in ordar to obtain a bearing on both surfaces

jdaniel, I wasn't aware that Jewell made a mauser trigger. As worn out as Mauser raceways are, how do you turn a mandrel to fit? I personally would be very very careful lapping the lugs. The receivers are case hardened in some areas and you can easily lap through the case. You will experience lug setback now.
Good luck with your build.

Butch is right. The triggger I have is a Timney. I do believe Jewell made a trigger for the M-98 back in the 70's and 80's but I am not sure.

Thanks, Butch. A friend gave me two barreled actions, a Brazilian and an Interarms Yugo, and the Blackburns were on sale so I bought one. I have no idea what I will do with them but the Brazilian is a DWM and I love German workmanship so something will happen when I get further through the back-log.

This is a decent Mauser trigger on a hunting or project rifle for $60. Mine was installed and set by a local GS in 1997. I had it checked last weekend, 2-lbs. :)

The OP sounds handy around the workbench, but I caution you as a weekend warrior. The other Traister I installed myself on a Swede Model 96 and it went Ka-Boom when I was hunting, chambered, then engaged the safety, walked about 50 feet, then casually flicked the safety off. The gun was pointed forward and down, safe but ????????

Stapher, what stock is that ?? Thanks.
