mausers.

already have a barrel vice and i am going to machine my own wrench. i have a leblond lathe (neighbors) and a bridgeport machine. i have had a michining class. (shock of the century on your comment on the savages ..... they have a barrel nut and the bolt is completely different) i know these things.... you guys dont get it.... I want to take on a difficult project not an overnight one.

Here's Turk. Mauser in 308 win. I bought it off a guy for $300, he used a winchester laredo barrel 30.06 still it can shoot under .200"

Shoots under .200? Why don't you take it to a BR match and show those guys how a $300 rifle shoots against a $3500 rifle.

wow you got a super deal. what stock is that? what safety did he use?

The safety is a dayton mark 2, I don't know what stock it is, but it is wood. When i bought it the guy told me he done all the checker and put the accessory rail in himself. He also jeweled the bolt changed the bolt handle himself, lightened the military trigger (looks like frankenstein) but it is lighter and less creep plus made a trigger shoe that feels like heaven. Milled the trigger guard down and bolt release. Plus added a Oberndorf extended floorplate release. When i walked out the door with it my buddy looked at me and said "you got to be the luckiest bastard i know".

Me and my buddies wanted to go to a couple shoots this year, i just need to come up with a match load for it.

You're BSing me. Shoots under .200 and you haven't made up a load for it. I forgot, I came in on the turnip truck.

5 shots 100 yrds... for me this is about all that i can get off of a bipod and i think its good. that is why i want to try my hand on a mauser.

You know I have some smaller at 200yds in registered matches, but I don't post them on a forum. I can not shoot like that on an everyday basis. Billfold groups mean nothing. Show me some from a registered match.

Sorry for the crappy pic, but you get the idea.

Klayton,

Sounds like you have the basic knoledge, and good friends that know what they are doing, and I think with a little research, you can do the work yourself. A good book to read before getting started is The Mauser Bolt Actions, by Jerry kuhnhausen.

Should answer quite a few questions you may have.

Butch, I have a pile of those "wallet groups" for each rifle, I just don't have time to go to matches on a regualr basis, like some people.

That pretty much sums it up. That and I don't feel like wasting my time going taking the picture, uploading on my computer, downloading it to this thread, just so I can prove to one person that I have rifles that shoot good.

You can come shoot against me anytime though.

My shooting is done at registered matches with moving backers and a time limit. Mine are not done at the local club. You're way over your head in this discussion. Have you ever shot in a real match? It ain't the same. Send me a PM with your email address and I will fill your email inbox. I have been around the block a time or two.

I think your ego is larger than your knoledge base. Unfortunately, Looks like 90% of your recent posts have been a bunch of worthless BS comments towards people that are looking for experienced and knoledgeable answers. It's unfortunate that people like yourself have a high post count with 90% BS and you say a few smart things here or there so unfortunately some people might take your i'll advised advise.

Like I said I don't have time to go to matches. All my shooting is done on a private range with ranges from 0 out to 1,600 yards. On top of that I have been taught to build custom rifles and shoot from a former benchrest shooter that use to shoot against guys and were personal friends with guys like Ferris Pindell, Robert Hart, and Ed Stolle. Those names ring any bells?

You may have been around the block a time or two, but maybe it was because you were lost!

I think this discussion is over, like most P**sing matches that people like you start, this thread has gotten completely off course and has done the OP absolutely no merit.

Spifire,
You asked about photos of groups above and I have a standing offer to send them to you. I met Gene Autry and Roy Rogers many years ago, but it didn't make me a cowboy.
Butch

LOL and again LOL!!!
Having dealt with Butch on the phone and learning first hand what a true gentleman he is it is more than humorous to see 10-post Spitty come on here and accuse him of being a troll. Spitty sounds like one of the legions of semi-informed expert benchresters who always know 'more', in any discussion.

butch,
thanks for all your input. I can tell by your posts that you have been around the block a time or two or three. i really just wish that you had some good advice or examples of mausers that you built instead of just claims that no one can build a sporterized mauser that is worth even attempting. you know Roy Vail had to start somewhere. he at one time was in the same position i am, trying to learn more. i wonder if some old man like yourself just sat there and told him that it could never be done. then boasted how awesome of a shooter he was? all i was asking for was input on where to start.
