mausers.

Klayton are you saying butch telling you about a stinky corvette wasn't helpfull to you? Butch you may be full of valuable and usefull information but if your not going to share it and are just going to run other people down we are all better off if you just keep it shut.

klayton83,
The first pic is a small thread large ring mauser that has been made into a small ring. I made the scope bases from damascus. It will become a 250-3000. Duane Wiebe is going to custom make the hinged floor metal and magazine box.

The next one is a 9.3X62 built on a Banner mauser. It has double square bridges.

Next is a rare 17-4 stainless mauser that is set up for 300 Win. Mag. It uses a Pre64 Mod 70 Winchester trigger.

The last one is a Mexican mauser in 7X57. It is my favorite.

Jkats,
This is just part of my mausers. I did not know you were the forum police. If he needs any mauser info, I would be happy to share it with him or any body. Maybe you need to contribute some photos of what you have built.

Since we are sharing.......
Butch I'll be the better man and apoligize for my remarks, however, based off all your recent posts... nothing impressed me, it gives a bad picture. You may be a gentleman, so I'll give you the benifit of the doubt. Your ego is still big though!

first pic is of a K98 I built a few years ago, nothing fancy, but it shoots good. In .220 Swift.

Second is my mexican 1910 in .22-250

Third is a K98 in 6.5-06.
IMG_2022_Small.JPG

I'm also currently building a 1936 Mexican for my wife and a VZ-24 in 6.5-06.
I'm also going to start on a .243-06 and a .338 edge on enfield actions in another month or two.
The 220 and 6.5 have my el-cheapo mock up scopes on them. The Mex has a weaver I found to give it a classic sporter look.

Oh, yeah.... here's a couple groups for ya... I just picked a couple off the top of the pile.
The larger group is a group I shot against a friend with my heavy barreled .308 Win hunting rifle.
I shot a smaller 5 shot group, he said prove it, so I shot another 5 in the same group.

The second group was my warm up group before the shoot off.

I never said I am a know it all, but I know more than many, and not as much as some. Keep in mind all my rifles are HUNTING rifles, not bench guns. I have had a few in the past, but didn't have time and sold them to build hunting rifles.

I never said i built any mausers nor did i ever claim to be an expert gun smith or shooter but i did share what i had and what i know about it(like the op asked for).

Spitfire and Jkats, I think we will all end up better in the long run. I will also apologize. I didn't see the photos, but I'm sure they are nice. I am building a Mod 17 Enfield in 416 Rigby. I have a 458 Lott in a CZ, 7MM Vom Hoffe express on a Santa Barbara mauser receiver. The best shooting mauser is my Argentine in 284. It is a consistant 5/8 MOA hunting rifle. The mausers are nice, but not safe queens. I have a wonderful kids hunting rifle and it is a 270X39AI[270PPC] in an Interarms minimauser.
Spitfire, I spent a little time with Mr Pindell at Jim Carmichel's motorhome at the Super Shoot this past year. He still likes to talk machine work. Too bad his hearing is bad. I believe that it was his nephew that brought him and I found out he was the pastor of the First Baptist Church in Garland, Texas. Right around the corner from us.
Spitfire, I see some of your photos coming up now. I live in the country and I have a slow satellite hook up for my internet. The 6.5x06 is the only one that has downloaded so far. It looks good! There is a thread now on the www.accuratereloading.com forum about 220 Swift in a mauser. I used to have a 17-220 Swift in a Mexican mauser. In my earlier years of shooting, John Bunch, said I needed it. I was not familiar with mausers and when it didn't shoot well, I had John sell it for me. I would love to have it back as it was a beautiful rifle with wonderful wood.
Butch

Butch, i too apologize for my angry words and sarcasm and i much appreciate your apology. All is good in my book.
p.s. my pics were the ones on the bottum of the first page but its far from any of the beatiful mausers that you posted photos of.

Thanks Butch, I hope the photos do show up for you. My best shooting mauser currently is the 220 swift. It also holds around 5/8" groups. Having fun trying to get it under 1/2". It's been hit and miss, but it's averaging in the 0.6's.

two of my most accurate mags are on a 14 and 17 recievers in 7mm Mag and .308 Norma Mag best group to date with the 7 is just above 0.2" with a called flier that took it out to 1/2". The Norma has been holding 1/2". I have not shot ether of them enough to nail down set numbers, but to date they have been exceptional shooters. I do like the CRF guns for some reason.

I also have had a passion with Mexican mausers as of late. The .22-250 is a shooter with lighter bullets, but I usually fall back to the 220 when varmint hunting because the 1910 is one of my pride in joys. I have also gotten some great deals on a couple actions lately too. Only bad thing about them as i'm sure you are well aware of is they are getting harder to find, and harder to find parts for. My wifes rifle is almost done. Chambered in .243, everything but the stock and bluing is done.

Funny you mentioned the 416, I have been looking for quite a while to build a .338-416, which a couple friends and relatives have built for themselves. I also thought, well I could just do the 338 LM, which is the same thing, but I wanted a mag fed 338 so I'm leaning towards the Edge. The .338-416's have been built into single shots.

Also, I've learned (am still learning) with my grandfather in-law, He is has the same problem with hearing and likes to talk guns and anything to do with shooting or building rifles. He's the guy that knows/knew all these guys.

He got to be Ed Stolle's friend by beating him at a match years ago with an old enfield bench gun back in the 60's. A group of guys were bad mouthing the enfields ("do you see the junk these guys are shooting") and didn't know who was shooting it until the second day when they were getting beaten by this guy. That guy was my grandfather in-law George Holter, and one of the other guys was Ed Stolle. Ed went to talk to George and they struck up a friendship.

Just orderd my 6.5 barrel. Going to try out a Shilen Match grade in a #5 contour 1-8". Can't wait, it's going on the VZ-24. I've use to using mostly Hart, Douglas, and a Blackstar in the past, so i'm interested to see what this one will do. I'm also getting a Rock Creek for my .243-06 and I'm really excited to try their barrels out.

Sorry here's some better pictures, the others are not very detailed.
The Mexican

The 220, I never did finish buffing the bolt though. Must have gotten busy with something else.
IMG_1908_Small.JPG

Here are a couple pictures of my wifes "New" 36 Mexican in .243. I removed the charger hump, added an FN 98 shroud (I really like these), faced off bolt, Recycled a Douglas .243 10" twist off a LR. I have a Timney being shipped with a side safety as we speak. I'm going to order her a straight thumbhole from Richards Microfit in Ex. Curly Maple. I also welded on the new bolt handle. Not quite done yet, but getting there. I think she'll like it but i'm still not sure if she'll get my old Leupold M8. ;D

Nice rifles. Any interest in a new polished FN bolt shroud? I like the knurled cocking piece on the Mexican.

Thanks, I was contemplating the other night if I wanted to keep it or go with a standard 98. I figured it adds a nice touch, and the wife likes it so it stays. That and they are spendy.

Hi all,

We have seen quite a few nice custom rifles in this thread.

Spitfire, I see some of yours still use the original 2-stage trigger, and was wondering what could be the interest for a fully adjustable 2-stage trigger similar to the Model22 X-treme produces for the Remigton 700 and now Winchester70? The model exist, just need to be produced...

There have been some very nice Mausers posted here, fer better then my 25-06 bubba-sporter K98.

I still feel that taking on a Mauser as a first "real project" (meaning there is a good amount of machining involved as well as a lot of handwork fitting the stock, etc) with a $250 budget and wanting to build a hunting rifle from it is a bit of a stretch. As I stated before, there are several pieces that should be upgraded for use as a hunting rig, such as the trigger, stock, possibly the safety, and they are all going to eat a large portion of the budget.

I'm not saying they can't be made into very nice rifles, only that they are not normally a rifle you try to build with a $250 budget, as you will eat that up very quickly in tooling and parts, and you likely will be stuck with a lot of very low-end pieces as well.

I have my own lathe and mill in my basement, I have been machining for a few years and playing with machining rifles for about a year as well. I have a Mauser that I will build into a nice hunting rifle one day (the 25-06 mentioned above), but I plan to learn a lot more before I attempt the Mauser. I have put together a few Savages, chambered some barrels, built a Rem 700, machined a ton of my own smithing fixtures, and have done some general tuning on triggers and such. But I would like to really hone my skills before I take on a project that will require so much time, effort and precision to really end up with a top notch rifle.

I am not exactly new to this, but I do not in any way consider myself experienced or an expert, I am at best a novice gunsmith and just slightly more of a general machinist. But I still feel I have a long way to go before I want to attempt a Mauser, as they are more complex and require more skill and time than anything I have done thus far.

I do feel you could put a decent range Mauser together for short money. But I feel there are just far better options for a hunting rifle. Even one of the FN SPR actions I have seen floating about would be a great starting point. Ready to rock right out of the box! And they are a high quality piece and a great foundation for a very accurate hunting or tactical rifle. They don't require any machining or upgrading like a surplus bubba rifle will. The trigger and bottom metal have been included on most I have seen as well, and they are great pieces that can be used without issue. It would be a great start for a rugged and reliable hunting rig, far better suited to the hunting environment than a surplus action with a military trigger (Mauser 2 stage's are not ideal for hunting) and 80 years worth of mileage and abuse on it. Not to mention the FN action is much stronger with much better steel used in production.

I wish you luck in the endeavor, I also hope you prove me wrong and build an exceptional rifle with your $250 budget. With the drive you seem to have, you likely won't skimp on time and effort invested, and that does count for a bit as well.

Post some pics when it's finished. I would really like to see the final product. Maybe it will give me the courage to attempt my own. I look forward to seeing what you come up with.

Kenny

I have been sporterizing Mausers for 45 years.
It is never worth the money.
Just buy a pre 64 Win M70 and put a different barrel and stock on it, and save some money.

But I keep sporterizing them, because I love them.

+1 by the time you would buy it and modernize it you could buy a newer action.

Where you buying the pre64's? i would love to get one

Pre 64 M70s are at every gun show I attend. A magnum in original and minty condition may go for $2k, but a 30-06 with some mods and scratches will go for $600 ask, take $550.

I can put a barrel, a stock, scope mounts, scope rings, a scope, and a sling on an M70 in two nights work.

To turn a $150 VZ24 from the gunshow into a similar quality rifle, it takes two months of evenings and more parts.

Man, i need to move wherever your at, i don't see them around here. they're on top of me and my buddy's list. We find mostly Rem 721 and 722

I just wanted to jump in here and say the last (4) pages have been a great read. I'm new to this type of fun you guys are having. But I would like to jump in and get my feet wet. I would like to address this to Member CLARK. I would like to build a VZ 24 rifle. Because of the History behind it, and the bolt action. My thoughts are it had been left out in the barn since the rifle was built. (Cosmetics not important) I,m thinking a Parker Hale barrel in .308 cal. and need advice. Your thoughts earler was to go with a pre 64 model 70 . May I ask why? also I would like any information on the build. You see I would be attending a Gunsmith school here at home Prescott Az. Thanks Dan

The only one with a the original is the last one pictured which is the 36 Mexican. Only reason it is still on there is I didn't recieve my new trigger yet. Got it in the mail and the 2 stage is getting replaced. I can turn 2-stages into near timney like performers, but it takes quite a bit more work than just putting a new one stage in.

I think a clean 2 stage would be cool, but I personally prefer the one stages.

I am building up a 98 as we speak. I purchased a lathe 1 year ago and have been building tooling for accurizing the 98 over the past year.
Building your own tooling helps with your machining skills. You will learn fast what is good and what isn't.
I have built an action mandrel and a bolt lapping jig that screw into the action.
The tooling you see in Brownells can be built saving many $$$$.
Using the lathe I also turned a new bolt handle, cut off old handle and welded the new handle on. A new handle can be bought for $10 to $20 dollars but why spend when I have the machines to do the work. MY TIME IS FREEEEE!!!
I was lucky and purchased this Mauser as a complete sporterized mauser in the 70's.
I have been wanting to do a custom build for quite sometime. Over the years I have purchase a Jewel trigger, complete new bottom metal with hinged floor plate for $40 at a gun show (Looks like the $200 metal today).
I just ordered a Hart 1-9 palma contour for a long range rifle I plan on building with a Shehane Tracker stock.
I say by all means continue to build your 98.
